What do the wings mount to - is just through the outer skin or is there some inner (wood?) bracing that the screws also bite into? I am specifically interested in the early wings, 58-60.

If you are mounting the correct wings, there should be wood framing through the old holes that the screws will bite into.

There was no wood originally. I added cross braces in prep for attaching the Wings. One thing-sometimes there needs to be a "shim" between the skin and brace to keep the skin from sinking into the frame. It depends on the trailer.

OK, discrepancy here? Your trailer had no wood backing to the wings and Frank's did. So does that mean there was a change in construction at some point? I guess I need to find some resto pics showing this area on a 59...

There may have been no wood framing that the wings mounted to on a 59. It probably took a few wings falling off to get some wood in there and by 62 they all had wood. Who knows. These things all are different.

I think there must have been a design change. The pics I can find for a 58: and a 59: don't seem to show any substructure for wing mounting.

57s didn't have wings originally. I am thinking of adding some to my 57, and I will need to add some wood in that area if I do. Depending on how you mount them, maybe you could hit the wood that runs vertically along the back edge of the window......hmmm... The wings didn't appear until 58. Stacy

Our '59 Airflyte did not have wood behind the wings. The screws just penetrated the aluminum skin. Staryn.

Yeah, my '61 didn't have any wood either. And I wasn't smart enough to add some when I had the chance. I'll be screwing mine on from the interior.
