My rig has flat hatch doors but the hatch doors on the rig that I just parted out has ribbed to match the siding. I believe mine is newer do to the fact that it had the wings with the spacers and the parted rig had the wood backed non-spaced wings. Can I assume that they went with a flat door later on?

Pretty sure mine are original and they are flat. Ribbed would have been nice for strength.

Sometimes, I think they just did things day to day at the old Shasta plant. But you may be right that it was how they did it on the later models. Mine is a 59 has no spacers on the wings, and had ribbed cargo doors that match the siding. Red Dirt

I like the day to day comment. That would make determining the year by design element interesting. You would have to include an endless set of variables such as whether certain materials were available each day at each plant and whether Joe or Jimmy was hungover or not. Talk about some one of a kinds out there.

Yeah, I like to imagine several guys standing around, laughing about how they put the seam on top of my wings, right where the drip edge dumped water onto the wings, forcing water directly inside. I bet the wood started breaking down in the first few years. ;D Gotta love it.

Remember too that there were 2 different plants making Shastas in '58, and a total of 6 plants by '69.

I definitely found a one of a kind in the rig I just parted out. Behind the paneling, drawn on one of the 1x2's was a rather large phallic symbol...seriously. Those workers must have been having a good time in 59.

True, I forgot that they had two plants by 58. Either way, it is still funny. It really is what helps give them character. It also gives us more freedom, while staying true to the original design.
