I've seen them both ways. Mine was missing wings so my husband made wooden ones and we painted them red. But if I had original wings I would leave them aluminum. Maybe you could get some sort of vinyl clingie or sticker with the tarheel tattoo and affix it to the wings and leave them aluminum?

I would say not paint. The wings as original aluminum are such a classic and iconic look! Have you seen the thread about shining them up? That is what we are planning on doing to ours to really give it some "umph"! haha

I'll get my DH to make and paint some for you to swap for those originals! ;-)

I'm going against the grain on this one...if you want to make it a tarheel trailer, it is a natural to paint the wings. The great thing about aluminum is that with a bit of paint remover the aluminum finish can be restored down the line. I removed the old paint from the front of my Compact, and there was nice aluminum underneath. Go for it, including those little feet!

I agree with saftybruce that to each his/her own. Although probably sacreligious to the Vintage Trailer purist I had my wings "dipped" in a camouflage pattern (See my Avatar) by Tarjac in Seneca Falls NY. They use a Fluid Imaging Technology to apply any patern you'd like. Their dip tank is 3' deep x 30' long so if I got really ambitious and removed the entire skin I could get it dipped. My bank account would dramatically "dip" as well so it won't happen. Tami - They probably don't have the cute tarheel feet though! Their website is www.tarjac.com if anyone is curious.

I am having wooden ones made and I am painting them orange to match my stripe. If I would of had the originals I would of left them alone. ;D
