Thanks 65callie, I'll take you up on that offer for the batting and yes I just have the 2 cushions. As you mentioned I too always use sheets, it's a lot of fabric for little money. Usually I buy vintage sheets as they've already proven they hold up better over time and are mega-cheaper than new sheets and then the extra added bonus is that they always had fun patterns back then!

Copy that on the vintage sheets being fun! I have a new holly hobby sheet still in package from the 70's I haven't decided what to do with and cabbage patch sheets and florals too. They are so fun!
Harrison429: PM, call or email me to let me know how soon you want the batting. Hopefully it will work for you and get it out of my house!

Hello again everyone, I'm back and finally working on the trailer some more but first I want to update... that the cushion upholstery was completed and with 65callies help (thanks) the batting worked wonders in making them look great! It's been another long stretch of minimal work but we're going camping next weekend and then again at the end of the month so I've lit a fire under hubby to get our permanent bed support done. So, that pic shows what we came up with. Remember we've stacked our twin beds on top of each other in the back when not in use and then pull the top one off the pile to create a king sized bed (that's already made The picture shows the bed support extended. The one section will slide forward (like the pic shows) and the flat support for 'across the aisle' will slide out from under the seat cushions and join across the support. Then when we don't need the bed the support will slide back under the permanent mattress (against the back wall). We'll putting thin strips of carpet under the sliding part to protect the floor from getting scratched and to make the sliding easy. Ultimately we believe (you know about best laid plans, right?) the forward support will also act as the base for our dining table that will have the sort of hardware like a card table where the legs will open up and sit in 'pockets' created in the support base. That means we'll have nothing in the 'aisle' floor when the bed isn't used and we don't need the table. The table top will probably slide in between the mattresses to store. That's the plan...I'm just hoping we get the bed support done before next weekends trip. We're still sticking close for now and going to Red Top, if it isn't too packed from kids being out of school! Oh, and I hope to have my temporary curtains (right fabric but not sewn) up by then too. image deleted

Thanks. It's exhausted us and the break was much needed but it's (past) time we got back to it. haha Sometimes I think the same thing...how'd I miss this thread?! Pages of someone's resto with mountains of info and I missed it. Go figure. I'm very pleased with the color pink...I feared bubblegum or little girl but it's not like that at all. Even the paint man had his doubts but was surprised at how great the color turned out. Anyway, despite my best efforts to do a pink & brown interior I just wasn't happy with the vibe I was getting when mixed with the orange walls so the interior will be blue w/pink accents. I think we've finally named her too "Flamingo Inn". I'll have to post the avatar even though it's just a rough draft right now. So much to do, so little time.

Thanks. I still have some details I want to add and figuring out the final coloring but it's pretty close. When I get enough time I need to make a proper negative to work from because we want to have it printed on a yard sign so we can put it out with the flamingos every time we camp! (Right now, Vista print has their yard signs on sale for $6...everyone should have one!)

Yea, we got more work done this weekend. We chose to use metal trim for our floor trim but we used it backwards or inside out instead of the usual way. I love the way it came out and how it looks. We chose this because the welting wouldn't have been wide enough to cover our inexperience in trailer rebuilding which had left a couple of larger gaps and because qtr round wood trim is too big and overpowering for the tiny trailer. I think this smaller metal trim was the perfect answer.

We also worked on the permanent bed support. We carpeted the bottom of the support for easy gliding since the one section pulls forward to support the 'foot of the bed'. The central support post is permanently attached to the flat (pink) board that goes across the width of the trailer. I plastic wrapped the wood so there is no fear of splinters catching on fabric, I painted it to make it pretty if I ever saw it. Part two of this project are the boards that will go under the upholstered cushions which will pull into the aisle and rest on the 'foot of the bed' support. It's busy drying now. In doing all of this we have not made any permanent changes to the original design nor added any nails/screws to the woodwork so if we ever want to go back to the original design we can. image deleted

Bed support pulled forward to support foot of the bed.
The under the bed sliding doors are temporary. Currently they are painted cardboard which will work fine until we can find a laminate we like and want to use.

How kool is that? I also like your floor molding, looks great. I agree with you that the 1/4 round is a bit much for our compacts. I believe I have an 8ft lenth of every wood trim that Lowes and Depot sells lol. I`ve spent 30mins here and there comparing them. My choice today is the small wood shoe molding, which I think I am going to use to trim out the windows. I found a nice flat trim for the windows but it doesn`t quite take up the excess window frame that sticks out inside these campers. Enjoying your thread, keep pics coming!

So, we're going a different route than initially thought. We're putting a fridge, toaster oven and microwave in the trailer instead of going with an ice box & oven. We got the fridge the other day and put it in the trailer (with just a little bit of room on each side) so it was time to finish the door trim.
Not being '60's skinny' the wood trim made the doorway uncomfortablly small so we found another way to go. The picture shows 'garage door trim' installed in place of the original wood (which had been hacked by the po anyway). Because it's flexible we've essentially added 2" of much needed doorway space. I used double sided carpet tape on the edges and nailed in the holes of the trim to keep it secure. Now we can keep the bugs out and not worry about squeezing through a small doorway. ;D

i recall there being talk of the rubber trim at Mckinney last year. looks good in place. We went with wood and it works for us but i agree if your not prepared to enter/exit the tiny door can cause problems, not only do i have to duck but turn sideways to exit. Guess people in the 60s/70s were not fat or tall... or if they were they didnt camp....
also LOVE the temp cardboard doors.... i like the spirit with that. i would have probably left it empty and open but you got out the old pizza boxes and went to work.
as far as that Flamingo Inn avatar goes... love it too. that needs to become a sign you can put up in your site.....
glad your getting so much done, its looking good. and no more milkcrates!!! yay! we really havent touched ours since last october (aside from small things and repairs)

Well it's less painful for me for it to be flexible as I go in and out since I'm always bumping into walls...can't walk straight for the life of me. haha The sliding doors are there mainly to test colors. I've run the gamut from pinks to browns and overlays trying to decide on the right 'look'. We picked out laminate but for the 6th time, it's been discontinued (argh) so I'm still not sure what we'll end up with there. I'm working diligently on many things but do hope to get at least a temporary flamingo inn sign done for the camping trip at the end of the month. Floor trim-check Bed support-check (oh thank goodness no more crates/stools beneath the bed!! door trim-check yep, I'm making progress but there is still more to go.

here we go again...undo then redo. so when we got the trailer we'd only been camping boondocking style for the past years and i couldn't wait to get back out into the woods but instead we've only been camping at the campgrounds and this is what i've learned...it's much funner camping at campgrounds when you have a trailer as opposed to a tent. so it seems we'll be camping more at campgrounds than i ever expected to and attending gatherings/rallys when i can because they are fun. that being said what i've learned about the camper is that we need more walking space! and trying to use the camper 'as a tent' isn't using the trailer to its fullest potential. so, we've taken apart our bed set up and turned it back into the original layout with the 2 gaucho's. in order to do that i had to make 2 more cushions and they were out of my fabric so i found this great brown w/gold highlights vinyl to use. so i took apart the cushions completely and remade them this past week. we'll put a table back in (like there would have been) in the red laminate i found and i hope to get the red laminate countertop installed over this long weekend too. man has this been a long road in the meantime, i'm also now on the hunt for a second larger (14'-16') trailer that includes a shower image deleted

here's the pic w/the cushions flipped over. vinyl for the day and fabric for the night. or so goes the thought until i get too lazy to flip 'em oh yeah, and the curtains are done. the little (white) shades velcro up for light and down for privacy...the fabric is stationary. image deleted

make up your minda already.... ugh.... not really. it looks great. i thought the big bed was real nice but this looks good too. little curtains fit the trailer nice and look like the are original equip. almost need your pizza boxes in a bright salmon or orange color to match both interior/exterior now.
when you get your bigger trailer (as we all know you will) on the road are you going to keep the compact too or will we see it up for sale on here?

i love to laugh even if it is at my own expense. gee i wish i could make up my mind offspringin, it sure would make this restore go a whole lot quicker! and since i found the red laminate i'll need to remake my outdoor sign 'cause the colors aren't right anymore. i've been doing so much work twice you'd think i already had 2 trailers! Nope, the flamingo inn will not be for sale however, people (65callie) have asked to be on the list for if it ever does. haha

Yup 65Callie is #1 on the list. But first 65Callie needs to win the lottery ;D Then 65Callie needs to leave the country because if Harrison every sells all I will hear is "I want my trailer back"!!!!!

Can I ask where you found the white shades that velcro up? Or did you make them?
|
|
|
Post by harrison429 on May 23, 2012 4:59:37 GMT -5
They don't make anything I'm ever looking for, sigh, so I made the shades. I thought to make them from drapery lining but then thought the vinyl would be easier to keep clean. So they are made from a regular shade that I cut to each window size and of course measured and cut the cute little scallops. The shades are sewn to the back of the valance and then I measured to place the velcro so that the scallops hung at a good level when the shades were raised. Yes Offspringin you're full of it all right...hmm, does that sound bad? I meant to say you're full of good ideas.
