After several trips to the DMV with my "Bill of Sale", I am told I cannot register my 1972 Shasta without proof of ownership from the previous owner. My Bill of Sale is not enough. Any suggestions? It appears I've been had. If I cannot register it, I cannot move it. In SC all travel trailers must be registered and tagged.

It appears I've been had. If I cannot register it, I cannot move it. In SC all travel trailers must be registered and tagged. I thought SC did not do titles on trailers? What more could you have besides your bill of sale; are they demanding you produce a bill of sale from when the seller bought it? NC allows you to buy a title bond, also called an indemnity bond, which will pay the "real" owner should he or she show up and say "hey this is my trailer." You get a provisional title, then if no one shows up to claim it in 3 years, you get a full-fledged title and the trailer is yours. You might check to see if SC allows this, as it's a straightforward way to get a title & a registration when you don't have proof of ownership from the seller. Good luck, Angel

do you have a friend or relative in another state register it there and then produce that registration/title to your dmv ?

First, call your state DMV, they know loads more than your local office. What state did you buy the trailer in? Some states don't require trailer titles, so the bill of sale is all there is. Did the trailer have a license plate when you bought it? I went through a big hassle when I went to register my trailer. You could try a titling service, or register the trailer in another state, Nevada and Maine were popular choices. Google can be your best friend- There are lots of other vehicles out there that require titles that people don't have, so do some searching and see what you can find out about your state. It took me a month to get my title, but I did (trailer purchased in New York, titled in VA). Take a look at this link for some ideas of ways around the title situation (such as mechanics lien, abandon vehicle, etc) scoot.net/faq/Register_a_barn_find

I did go to the state DMV, they were not very willing to search for a solution. They said I must have proof of ownership from the person I purchased it from. He told me he had no other documents. He gave me a bill of sale. The state of SC does require campers to be tagged if they are going to be moved at all. Any help or suggestion would be great, I am very disheartened.

Thanks for that input - I am also struggling getting a title in Illinois. Is it safe to use a title service? I live in the Greenville area. Send me an email and I will tell you how to do it legally. There are several ways to get it done. I did it when I built my own Teardrop and when I bought a Shasta in Tenn. Contact me at r_whiten@hotmail.com Rick

@maureen- I don't know anything about titling services, just that they exist and some people have had success using them. I would probably try everything else I could figure out before I went that direction, but it is all up to you.

The best thing to do is to apply for a lost title first. This can be done either through your local DMV or directly to Columbia, SC. I am having to do the same exact thing since I too live in SC. The original title may be registered to one owner and with a possibility of having to track down the owner for their signature on the new documents, bill of sale or title transfer. I bought my trailer from a scrap yard and all I got was a bill of sale. If I were you, I'd try applying for the lost title. It maybe your best bet and way less expensive.
