Ok i just picked up a 61 airflyte and it has a galvanized awning over the front window, is this original or did someone add it after the fact ? I have looked at lots of pics of other trailers in this age range and can not find any others with a metal awning on the front window.

well I am new to the Shasta's as well, but I have never seen one with an awning in that year range. but I dont know maybe it was an option, or dealer installed item. good solid info on these campers is sketchy in a lot of areas.

It is a rock guard. Will keep you from breaking the window wile towing.
I am going to have to make one for my Compact.

Did you make one for your Compact? Anyone else make one? I'd love a photo and some basic instructions if you did.

I fortunately found one that a friend of mine altered so it will fit our Compact as I really wanted the front rock guard on ours. It wouldn't be fun to end up with a broken front window.

ours does not have one(i wish it did) and if i could find a compact rock guard i would put it on. i was trying to think of a system that maybe wasnt permanent, maybe snapped on when traveling. i have not worked out that design to a point where i feel comfortable adding it to the camper yet just crossing fingers that nothing bad happens. We generally tow with kayaks on the roof of the truck so i figure that has to offer some kind of protection... rolling the dice..... then again ours are the generic flat glass 2 pane windows so replacing the glass shouldnt be all that costly.... i think they ALL should have come with one in the first place.....

I would like to find a source for these Otherwise I will be building one from scratch or Ill pull one off something else to make a template or a print so I can duplicate it. I think these canned ham sream for the front awnings they look great when extended. and they are very functional . The will also keep the rain out of the front jelousy windows when driving in the rain.
The sheeting on the ones I like would be a corrigated opege (sorry for that spelling) fiberglass that lets some light thru not corrigated metal like here. Next one I get close to I am going to snap some pictures of it for referance.
The scotty I just redid had one really added alot to the trlr I think.
Is there a source for these??........ maybe I should make a dozen of them LOL bet they would sell

I want one, as well. I like the fiberglass idea. If you do decide to make extras, please let me know. 1962 Airflyte.

Hmmmmmmmmmmm.
I know of a scotty that is for sale in need of repairs that has one. The asking price is a bit too much, untill now. Maybe that awning on it could be the linch pin.
The picture up above in this thread that last one it is a front awning with the fiberglass panel the one I am speeking of thats what Im unsure about duplicating. The frame and arms and brackets and lock would be easy.
I am going to search it.
Another thing I think these hams screem for is the smaller canvas awnings for the rear window and the 2 windows on the drivers side.
These are another upgrade that could be installed without hurting the restorations correctness.
They look really great and help keep things much cooler on the hot days too.

We saw some decorative aluminum sheets at Lowes for $26 (2ft x 4ft). plus they have U channel for $8 an 8ft stick. The aluminum is thin but thick enough to stop rocks breaking our window.

The more I think about it the older photo with the metal that was probably installed buy a prevoius owner after the original fiberglass insert broke or cracked that is common they get brittle when they get old definatly a downside of it. If you dont lock them down good they catch wind thats the way a lot of them go too. As I type this im remembering I know where there is an abandonded buzzerd that I think may have one.

How many of you have had broken front windows because of lack of a rock guard? Would mud flaps on the tow vehicle help prevent it? Since I discovered that when towing I can see straight through my Compact to see the car behind me, I'm thinking I'd hate to give that up by putting a rock guard on.

mud guards will help, but mostly on the bottom part of the camper, the rock guard I think would be more from rocks from other cars that you are meeting, just like the way your tow vehicle gets the occasional rock to the windshield. only your tow vehicle has safety glass, your camper does not. so it will shatter the whole thing everywhere.

i intend to build either a guard from plexi with a alum frame that would mount only when traveling OR make that same guard hinge up like standard rock guards do. I too open the curtains when towing and it allows me to see behind the trailer. Lets me know when someone is tailing me and helps me to see when they are changing lanes like morons behind me....

Couldn't wait. Took a walk down the block and it has one in tact. It is going to look great on the trotwood im currently doing and I have something to work with. Bet a case of bud gets it LOL I know the guy.
This perticular frame is radiused corners thats not normally what Ive come across but I think it will suit the trotwood fine. Its also too big but resizing down will not be hard either.
Getting the same looking extrusion and lock pins is important. I think they are still putting these on new travel teailers arnt they? Could get laches and arms and hardware new. Someone is still making these gottabe.

I've thought having the awning would be cool just from the vintage standpoint but the view through the whole trailer is good, well it was good until we threw a pedal boat on top of the pile in the truck bed! haha I guess the awing is back in play now ;D

We`ve decided not to use a rock guard (unless its plexi) as we like to been able to see through both windows. I think we`d rather chance replacing glass than giving up been able to watch rear traffic.

Let me shed some light that I have not heard in the thread yet.
One thing shasta did that was different than anybody else is run the front windows all the way and I mean ALL the way into the corners.
I think it is a nice element worth all the compramizes.
In terms of these front awnings it creates an issue. All the other extruded, aluminum framed, fiberglass insert, radiused cornered, colapsible, front window awnings/rock gards are TOO NARROW by about 6 or 8 inches..
I know this because I have 2 such awnings and 2 differetnt hams a trotwood and a astrodome and it fits the trotwood like a glove but is not wide enough for the shasta.
SOOOOOOOO
That means all the ones that are correct surviving had to be originals and thats probably not many.
Maybe a few more fabbed up correctly.
I am willing to let loose with one of the ones I have it can be altered and widended by any reasonably resourceful steward.
Dont need the other for the astrodome but Im not seeing it worth that much Id rather keep that instead.
Let me know

Mine's corrugated fiberglass, it wouldn't be too hard to make one using PVC roofing like this:http://www.homedepot.com/buy/building-materials-roofing-gutters-roofing-roof-panels-panels/palruf-26-in-x-12-ft-clear-pvc-roofing-panel-177863.html Or fiberglass like this:http://www.lowes.com/pd_12574-293-C25TF.117_0__?productId=3050389

A friend of ours had a foam lined boat cover sewn to snap on. Works well and protects the glass.
