When we got our trailer the vin was so filled with paint it took a lot of work just to expose the vin stamp. The stamp used created very thin #'s that I had to hand scrap out with a pin. Not wanting to cover the vin again I was unsure how to keep the original stamping visibile while painting and protecting the tongue. I finally came up the way to handle it. First I sprayed a very fine layer of rustoleum primer over the tongue. Then I put painters tape over the vin and took a pencil rubbing of it. Next, I cut out the vin #'s as best I could and used them as stickers to place over the stamped vin before doing a final paint on the tongue. It worked great. Not only can you see the #'d area that didn't get the paint but you can still see the actual stamp lines of the vin. I'm super happy it worked out so well. ;D Attachments:

VIN after painting. If you enlarge the pic you can clearly see the stamped lines. It's not perfect but then nothing about our 47 year old girl is. Attachments:
