I have a 03 F150 with a V6 automatic. It is rated to tow a maximum trailer weight of 5700 Lbs. I am towing a 10' compact. Do you think I need a transmission cooler? I am heading to North Ga a lot, witch can get hilly.

I would say yes for sure, if it doesnt have one all ready, they are cheap and good insurance against overheating your transmission.
anytime you pull anything any distance I would recommend one. it sure cant hurt, so why not take advantage of the extra security and piece of mind.

The thing that bothers me is that the transmission cooler sits in front of the radiator. If the truck is working hard to pull the trailer up a hill won't this cause the truck to run hot?

that is usually not an issue, it is so much smaller than the radiator it wont cover 1/5 of the surface area of it, and most cars dont really need a radiator as big as they have, that is why the thermostate is in there to stop the flow or start the flow of water to keep the engine in the propper operating temperature. I have installed a dozen of them in everything from tow vehicles to drag racing vehicles, and never had an issue.
if you do have an overheating issue you have other problems, like water pump, low water, colapsed hose, timing out of adjustment, etc.

there are different types "bar and plate" type and "tube and fin" type, bar and plate design is considered by most to be the most efficient (bigger bang in smaller package). so if you are looking for the smaller size that is the way to go, but the trade off is Price as usual look at these www.summitracing.com/search/?keyword=transmission%20cooler&dds=1I cant believe no one else has chimed in, I am an old gearhead with 20+ years of racing behind me, so I am a firm believer in one, here is the last one I installed about 2 years ago, it's huge, hung plumb down behind the bumper in my 383 powered S-10

I put one in my S-10 6 cyl just to pull my ATV trailer around. I bought a cheapie that hung out front, and hooked in with rubber hoses. Never regretted the little bit of money it cost, and I am sure helped save that tranny. I am not a racer, mechanic, or gearhead, just some nut. But I don't think you can go wrong. Look at it this way, too. If the camper isn't the only thing you end up pulling, you are saving yourself even more...
