i've been trying to convince myself to leave the door alone and just put a kickplate at the bottom, but it is so rotted down there i just couldn't help tearing into it. here is a before pic. i'll post some more pics tomorrow of the initial demo. i am excited to put some insulation in there and to have a fresh piece of shellac'd birch on it when done. shouldn't be too much trouble i hope. i will also post some pics and questions about my bargman L-66. there was a loose piece in there when i took it off and i need to identify what it is. wish me luck! paul

okay, i got out there early this morning and dismantled the rest of the birch from the door. i'm not sure if i will replace all of the support wood or not, but some of it will be new. notice in the pics where a screw missed the wood almost all together! out with the old... a fresh canvas... this will be good to have replaced with something solid... oops!

Since I just redid my door, I will send you pictures of my redo. I also took measurements of the door as well. I plan to post them on this site for others who's doors are rotten or broken. They made these lite weight and didn't put any insulation in them. I will post the info later tonight when possible. Rick

Has anyone ever built up a "new" door with a solid core? I am getting to the point where I will be rebuilding my door and was debating a solid core but am concerned it may be too heavy for the hinge and general application. My rebuilt framing will hold up a bank vault door so I'm not worried about that. Pros? Cons? I do like things over built

I just finished building a new door this weekend. The only part from the original door that was reused was the upper aluminum skin. I'm trying to figure out a clean way to weatherstrip the door a little. If anybody has any suggestions, please let me know.
As to the question of making a solid core door, my opinion would be why bother? The way the door is originally made is similar to a hollow core door. Maybe not the best for security, but less likely to warp than a solid door. As to weight, I doubt the hinge would have problems holding up a heavy door.
One other note. I kind of wish I had put a window in the door. a smaller fixed glass window in the top would ahev been nice, even though certainly not original.

My camera just doesn't come out often enough. So as not to highjack this thread, I'll post some pics tonight over in the pics section.

So as not to highjack this thread... No, of course not. Every restoration project deserves it's own thread. Still wanna see pics though. Brian
