You can just barely see it here, but my left rear window is half fire escape, it has a latch on each side and tilts up to allow you to dive outside. I'm just curious when they started using them... Attachments:

maybe because it is considered a "home" maybe, or just for safety, I know OSHA requires all buildings to have 2 ways of egress. or two ways to exit. in the military we had a storage building that failed the safety inspection every year until we added another exit.
I'm sure some states have "weird" laws, it might be added to meet the requirements of all 50 states, since it is a bit newer.

There's no screen on it either, they put an integral screen over the forward half and just surrounded the whole window with empty trim.
I like having it, whatever the reason. I'd have to run the stove/furnace/tank gauntlet to get out without it. I'm going to try to design the cabinets on that side strong enough to add a handle on the bottom, to allow myself to do a feet-first, "chin-up" exit.

As far as I know, the Escape Windows were first being used in the early, early 70's. and then they came up with the Escape Roof Vents, I believe in the 90's. Jerry, a friend of ours has a 1970 Scotty and came up with a cleaver way to have AC in the summer. www.nationalserroscotty.org/resources/ac/ac-jMaurer.html

Dat's a good idear! If I ever add AC, that's probably what I'll do, if I can find one that fits.
