Hello all, just wanted to post the correct color code for 7 way connections.
The colors are stamped into the 7 way plug and receptacle. The code below is used for all 7 way wiring.
White=Ground Black=Hot Charge Line Blue=Brake Hot Green=Running and Tail Lights Brown=Right Turn Red= Left Turn Yellow or Center post= Aux
If you are switching from 4 way flat, the code is DIFFERENT:
White=Ground Green=Right Turn...... 4 way Green goes to 7 way Brown Brown=Running Lights..... 4 way Brown goes to 7 way Green Yellow=Left Turn..... 4 way Yellow goes to 7 way Red
Many vintage trailers did not follow the universal wiring code, so you may need to test each wire to see what it does. With a Good Ground, put 12 volts to each wire to see what works.
Note: eTrailer comes up first in any search for wiring codes. The 7 way code on the site is WRONG.
DO NOT USE eTrailer's code when wiring a 7 way system.
Hope this saves some of you headaches when doing tow wiring...

So, the brown and green are reversed on Shasta trailers? This is the diagram I am used to, matches my truck. But rather like this?:

Hey Ron,
The diagram that you show is the way I have all of my trailer wired and all of my tow vehicles.

VIKX-thank you for this, when I googled the wiring diagram everyone seemed to have a different chart and most just used the e-trailer diagram.
Also the 7stud Junction box made by Phoenix is also mis-marked and the color coded wrong. Just an fyi!

My Shastas are wired as described: 68 and 69 LoFlytes, 58 Starflyte, 57 Deluxe and two 57 1500s. One did substitute black for brown on the RT...
I posted on the 7way plugs and receptacles. The colors are STAMPED in the plastic on most 7 ways.
Green is running lights. Brown is Right Turn. This has nothing to do with vehicle wire colors.
The universal 7 way Trailer color code is used on almost all trailers heavier than 1000 pounds. Just makes sense to follow thru and think: Brown is RT, Green is Running Lights, etc .
eTrailer errors: 1. There is no orange wire; normally this is a back up light or spare wire and yellow 2. Brown should be RT 3. Green is Running Lights. 4. RED is Left Turn
A person could easily wire as eTrailer recommends to work. I like my 7 ways to work with all trailers; therefore follow the Universal code. Why not?
I'm curious If the powers that be are trying to resolve this. It would be good to change the code for 7 ways to match 4 ways, 6 ways, etc. Wouldn't that be too easy??
This has caused so many so much trouble. Just trying to get it sorted out to make it easier. Thanks all, for the replies.

NOTE: I'm talking about 7 way blade connectors. The older 7 way round connectors are another kettle of worms...

The wiring I do is the 2nd diagram.
I should say here, that many trailers have odd color wiring and it is not the color that matters. It is the position of the wires in the 7 way that is important. In other words. You can use a pink wire in the green slot, as long as it runs the tail/clearance lights.
Hope that makes sense. The "green" slot should be tail/clearance lights.
Never trust a trailer wire color to be correct. It's easy to test with a 12 volt power source to see what wire runs what.

I started reading the 7 way thread and it realy threw a red flag up for me. I had my 72 GMC wired with a 7 pin to tow my 29' prowler. it works great. I'm at the point where its time to wire the plug (trailer side) on my rainbow. The cord I bought from vintage trailer supply matches up.( Right colour, right position) The box I bought at princes auto however is all wrong.
By reading this post and going out to my big trailer, I tested the lights by putting a wire from the black (hot) wire to the other wires. So ,, Black and green (running lights) black and red ( left side turn and brake) , Black and brown (right side turn and brake) if your batteries are in the lights you test will light up
I used a meter for black and white 12v and did not test black and blue (brake controller)
Thanks for having this thread. It saved me from a big hassel
