After reading the comments on finding the VIN and getting a lot of rust in my hair, I thought I'd found it and so I headed to the DMV with the number and Bill of Sale. Lucky for me the trailer still had expired plates on it because whatever that number was it wasn't the VIN. Sure looked like it. Now I have the papers to send to the old owners for a release. I hope this works.

hello, what I don't understand with a bill of sale is what if the old owner is deceased or not found how would you be able to get a release signed? We are thinking of buying an untitled trailer this weekend and if its a nightmare to title this may not occur

spiffytyrant, Call your local DMV and ask them what you need to bring in.
Where we live in North Carolina, for a vintage trailer without a title, all I need to bring them is 2 Bill Of Sales....one from the seller and one from the previous owner.

It was scary for me to buy this trailer without a title but it seemed like such a good deal and I loved the trailer so I just decided to spend $600 and if I lost the money, well, so be it. I wouldn't like it but I could survive it. But now I have a happy title outcome to tell you about.
I sent the owners the papers and on the same day I got the certified mail receipt back, I also got a lovely long letter from the previous owner. Apparently there were several owners in between but since they are the last people on the title, I needed their release. In her letter she told me that when she bought the trailer it was sitting in a neighbors lot with blackberries growing through the windows. It was pink although I don't know if she meant inside or out. Her husband thought she was crazy but she bought it and "scoured the countryside" for parts to fix it up and they spent 10 years camping in it. The only reason they sold it was due to health issues.
And now Dottie is mine! And I have title papers. Sometimes you have to take a risk.

Great outcome, Swirlygirls and well stated. The amount of risk each if us is willing to take and sometimes it isn't any but when you can and it turns out well...what a great feeling!
