Just registered the little SugaCube this morning in minutes with no problems. Went to the satillite office nearest my home and was the only person in there. My only disappointment is that I cannot have a "vanity tag" but I will take what I can get. No questions, no hassles, just the bill of sale, the Vin # and my driver's license. But then this is in AL, ya'll.

Sounds about like GA. If the previous owner had registered it like he said he did i would have had it even easier. Because he broke the chain of ownership i had to have the police come out and run a check on the VIN number, to make sure it wasn't reported stolen i guess. But even that wasnt a huge hassle. 12 bucks later had my plate. I wish we were allowed to get the antique tag but since its a trailer has to have the standard trailer plate here too.....

Offspringin, I expected the police visit at the house to verify the VIN, but she didn't ask and I didn't volunteer! I did have a vision of either a Vintage tag or one that spelled "sugaqbe". Oh well, the $35 I paid was cheaper than a vanity tag anyway!

"Late fees"? Really? That is a surprise. In NY State, the trailer registrations run Jan 1 thru Dec 31. If you wait till later in the spring to renew, they will prorate the fee. I have done it often with my utility trailer, the $13.25 turns into $10 or so if I wait till April or so. We also have the handy option of renewing existing plates online, so that is how I generally do mine. I ran into my first titled trailer this year, a 1999 car-hauler. I also tried to renew the '70 16SC, but found that the DMV purges the records after 5 years. We haven't registered it since 2004. I could not do it online with the old plates, and will have to register it with new plates the next time around. It should not be a problem since we have had it registered before, just the cost of a new plate and registration fee, which if I remember was only $33 (with the plate) the last time.

Michigan has had permanent trailer plates for a while now. They way more than annual plate, but last as long as you own it. A typical trailer is $75, goes up from there based on weight. Best part is not dealing with the renewal paperwork!
