I purchased what I think is a 1963 Model 1900 from a guardian whose father was in a rest home. There was no title, but I got a bill of sale. I found the VIN number, but it's really hard to read because of rust. Can I get someone from the DMV to verify it?

Something you might like to try is to use a paint remover over the stamp of the VIN on the tongue. It may well lift the old paint and the rust right with it so as to make the stamp legible. I would only suggest rubbing it off with a cloth though, don't try to sand the rust, as sanding may further damage the numbers. Another trick I have tried is to clean the stamp and rub it with a white crayon. Sometimes the simplest technologies work the best with these ole babies...

I can see a couple of the numbers fairly clear. I've tried several things, chalk, paint remover, rust remover. It's just too damaged. Can I have someone with the Highway Patrol or DMV look at it and issue a new title if they can't decipher the number?
Also, has anyone ever tried getting a title as a "vintage vehicle"? I understand there are special rules for a vehicle over 50 years old.
