I am in need of a source to make the top aluminum for my camper. I live in the western Chicago suburbs and I can't find a source to make this material. Are there any members who can point me in the direction of help? PO put some kind of roofing coating on and it has truly messed up the ability to repair, also has added a lot of weight. Attachments:

Sorry I can't help with suppliers in the Chicago area. Also impossible to tell from the picture but the coating looks similar to what we found on our roof. I'd suggest trying a paint stripper and steel wool. On ours the paint stripper took some off by itself, but to get down to aluminum required steel wool with stripper. We used "Klean Strip Strip-X Stripper".
For me it would be a major project to replace the roof (but I may be inept). I'd certainly try to clean off the gunk before pulling the roof, unless there's serious damage.
Hope this is of some help.

I don't really think there is damage, but I know the vent area leaked. The coating is like a heavy coating silver with a texture similar to sand. It seems heavy when I push up on the aluminum skin from inside. I need warmer weather to get stripping on it.

I am clear across county from you so can't help with your area. However, I am replacing all of the skin on my 61 compact. I went to two large sheetmetal fabricators here and have gotten quotes from both of them. Since i already have the skin off, including the roof, I will take the pieces to them to use as a pattern. They can then put the necessary breaks in them to match the original skin. These are both reputable shops and I am confident they will meet my needs. As far as cost is concerned, it will run about 90 dollars per sheet. That is with me doing the removing and reinstalling. I would suspect that somewhere in your area, there is a sheetmetal fabricator that can and will do the same for you. You might also look up Tylerbes on this site and question him on the roof. I know his blog shows him replacing the roof and it looks like he used a solid sheet. Anyway, hope this helps. Incidentally I looked up his email, it is tylerbes@gmail.com Chuck

Greetings, I just got my Shasta 69, the roof has been replaced, looks good but it's not painted, bare metal. I'm concerned about oxyzenation (sP?) should I paint it? and with what? I don't have metal experience. thanks, tiajannet

I am in the process of reskinning my whole trailer. I am hoping to have the roof done this weekend. I got my one piece roof at a local company but I know they'll ship it also. The seamless roof comes 8.5ft wide by however long you need it. They charged me $2.65 a sq foot for mine, it's in a big roll in my garage. It's not that heavy just awkward, I believe it's 26ga raw aluminum. Here's the link- www.themetalcompany.com/

Silver Slop is the worst! Trying to strip it is a nightmare; it's asphalt based and turns sticky and black. ugh. Doesn't sand, either. I think you are correct to replace the metal.
Our 57 Corvette looked like a frosted cake on the roof, silver slop version. No way to save the metal and it did weigh a ton. I bought ours near Portland Oregon, shipping would be outrageous.
Try local Semi repair shops; they have aluminum like Schweet mentioned.
