We camped this past new years weekend in South GA. Camped at Florence Marina State Park. The campground itself is alright for camping, not many things to do there unless you like to fish. Its only a couple of miles from Providence Canyon State Park (that does not have a campground but i will do another review on this state park as it certainly deserves it). The bath house was clean but could use some renovating for sure. Of course there are other places to camp that are within driving distance of Columbus. The campground is not the point of this post, just a side note.
We had these reservations months ago. Since making the reservations I have started to research my Grandfathers involvement in WW2. As it turned out he did his basic training at Fort Benning in Columbus and was in the Infantry.
The museum was very large and very nice. Their website has a wealth of information on their exhibits inside and out. It really was one of the nicer museums i have been to in my memory.
Admission is technically free. They rely on donations mostly. They suggest $5 a person and bottle neck the entrance to the collection boxes but i assume they would let you in should you choose not to donate. They have a gift shop full of military items. There is an IMAX theater ($$$) there. They also have battle simulators for an additional cost as well.
Outside around back there are a couple of tanks, and the "Company Street" which is a collection of actual buildings made in WW2 for the troops to live in. They were supposed to have been temporary just long enough for the war but were used till the mid 90s. These are fenced in and only accessible during a free tour (have to call/check with the desk to get times, we missed it not knowing that information and could only see them from their surrounding fence.)
In any case. I thought it was really well done. Really well thought out, laid out. I was very impressed. If you have family (or you yourself) were in the military i think this would be an interesting stop.
