So I'm new to this and this might be a dumb question -- is there a switch for my porch light? I have a '54. I replaced the porch light thinking it would go on with the sconce directly on the interior wall inside. Apparently, that's not the case.
How do these things turn on?
Thanks...

When you say you replaced the light, do you mean the bulb or the light itself? Since you are talking a '54...it might be possible that there is a short in the wiring to the porch light. Before ruling out that the switch is not activating the porch light, check the socket and make sure juice is going to it...I am electric challenged myself, and this is just a thought. Also have you removed the switch plate and checked to see if it looks like the connecting wires lead to both the sconce and the outside light socket? There are no dumb questions or dumb answers when dealing with these vintage campers...I am sure there are other members who were a bit bashfull that are experiencing the same thing who are very glad you posted the question. We are all in this together. Finally and this might be a bit chauvenistic, but if all else fails, buy it some cheap champagne, whisper sweet nothings to it telling it you will respect it in the morning, and maybe that will turn it on!

There should be a switch for the porch light. Originally, the switch was close to the door, maybe on the closet. The porch lights in the handles are 12 volt. Is this what you have? Can you post a picture?

I have a 63 airflyte. Was a porch light original to that model? There is a light switch by the door, on the closet and a hole on the outside were the light must have been.Does anyone have a photo of an original shasta porch light?

Most likely if there was one installed it was not original (I think...but I should not swear to that....) Some were apparently added on the underside of the pull handle to the left of the door. Check there.
And by the way, if anyone has photos of this type of light under the pull, I would love to see how it was set up. Would like to add one to mine while I have the wall opened up.

Thank you for putting these up here. I want one!! My Airflyte has a bit different grab handle, with a small cut-out in it, looks like would be a good spot to put a name tag. The basic shape is the same though, and I love the way that lights up! It looks simple enough to add, the hard part will be convincing myself to drill a new hole through the skin.

To the original question here, "where is the switch?"... Since it is a '54 is it possible that it is run in with the running lights and is only on when the rest of the exterior lights are on? Some of the earlier ones had the dome light inside which ran off the tow-vehicle connection only.

Good call, Chris. I've only seen the 57s...
By the way, it's easy to install a socket in the handle. Mine had the screw holes and socket space molded in.

Don't have either on my 56, must have been an upgrade option. Sure would be nice to have a light on the outside like this.

Sundance had the handle and Butch Cassidy didn't. Definitely an option... Here's another idea. Below is a porch light made out of an extra clearance light Attachments:

This trailer had a dent in the wrong spot. I had a really cool aluminum light base, so placed it on the dent. Provides light for the step. I'll use a clear lens for it. Attachments:

The small round light to the right of the door is inexpensive. It works well and the footprint is small enough to be hidden with a vintage light. It's the "hunt" that's fun... Attachments:

The little porch light on this trailer is a boat light. It's cool and retro looking. The "guy" is fabricating a dutch oven rack. Attachments:

a marine light seems like a worthy option to explore....though supposed I'd have to open things up again which I'm loathe to do.....maybe there's a battery powered option.
