I see people mention RV Putty a lot and prefer it over Butyl tape but when I search for RV Putty all I find it butyl tape. Can someone provide an example?

Here are the two tapes. Butyl is slick, sticky and grey. (brown paper) It is great in areas that need to have an extra good seal, but gets oozey in the summer. RV putty tape is called "butyl" but seems to be a mix. (crinkly paper) It's whiter in color and not nearly as sticky. It should not be installed cooler than 60 degrees. I also use Tacky Tape (brand name) which is 1/16 x 1/2. It's great for narrow thin areas such as door trim and windows/cargo doors with the black gasket. Available at roofing supply places, it's sold ad metal roofing seal. Attachments:

Thanks! Is there also a putty in a non-tape form for smaller spots, like where screws go into the skin? If not, what's the correct stuff to be using there? (jackrabbit123 is with me )

The Butyl Putty Tape. It's only about $5.00 a roll and you can never hav too much putty tape around .... All the scrap that I end up scribing off the edges I roll into little balls and keep for just such things.

I use Geocel Gutter Seal for screws in the skin or little holes. It is silver grey and matches the aluminum. You can find clear as well. I like the screw on cap because the seal last for a long time. On the edge trim, putty alone should seal. I normally don't use anything extra, just new RV putty tape. Little pieces of putty are always handy. It must be covered for storage to retain the sealing ability. Attachments:

I love the silver gutter seal for the door trim, the edges at the bottom. You can't even tell there's a sealant there. Good stuff.
NO SILICONE.

Yeah, putty tape is like modeling clay from 4th grade art class, you can do anything you want with it. But that's for under water fills and heater exhaust vents and such. For the screw heads, use a goopy sealant. There are lots of non-silicone sealants out there, every hardware chain has one.

New to this site, so hello to all. We just bought a little beauty of a camper - a 1963 Friendship Vacationaire. Love it. I watched mobiltecs video on caulking and installing the jrail and it was so helpful, but didn't see anything about the screw holes along the metal sheeting itself? At what point in the process do you seal these screw holes? Is this a prudent precautionary.measure or only one needed if there are apparent issues? Will be resealing and painting the whole exterior, so more questions will certainly follow.

Screw the screw in, back it out, put a little dab of calking in there and then screw it back in if you feel the need. But make sure you leave no residue outside of the screw head or the paint might chip away from there later.
