Since we picked up Shasta #2, our 61 Deluxe, in September of last year I haven't made much progress working on her. I figured if I start a thread it might encourage me to get to work. Here is a picture from the PO when we bought it. Round trip to Bogart, IN was 36 hrs. Its about 11 hrs nonstop each way, but we stopped overnight in the camper in a parking lot for some rest. I need help picking a name. My first thought was Miss Piggy. Shes a big ham! My tow vehicle is green so Miss Piggy would always be chasing Kermit. THe wife says it would need to be pink and I like the yellow. Also considering a pirate ship like name. Like the jolly roger or black pearl, but those don't seem to fit... I have a been aquiring tools, materials, and acessories so I have been doing someting. Attachments:

We picked this material and ordered a 8'x12' awning from Kristi as our Christmas gift to each other. We ordered late so we knew it wouldn't be ready for Christmas. We got it early this year, and we unboxed it and bought poles, stakes, and rope. I still haven;t put it up. Bad weather, lack of time and space seem to keep getting it the way. I found a lady that works in the paint dept at my local Home Depot that makes and refinishes violins and her son builds guitars, so I have been learning about french polishing from an expert and how to repair a cracked shellac finish. Worked on polishing up some of the paint. Unfortunately its thin enough to see thru in some places and the rear camper paint is peeling. I thought I found a good color match in a spray can that would work for now, but it looks a little too bright. I bought a media blaster to work on the surface rust on the frame and clean up the wheels. Big news is I ordered tires last Friday. Its big news for me. I'll post a pic when they arrive. Your gonna like this! When we bought it the PO advertised new tires. They weren't new and they were car tires that were barely rated for the weight of the empty trailer and the guy owned an RV dealer when he was younger. UGH!!! The ride home was a little nerve racking but the car tires made it. Not much sway but lots of bouncing. Attachments:

I plan on doing that with in the next couple of weeks, my new rims arrive on Saturday from VTS!! I pmed you some info. I ordered the baby moons from VTS, a while ago, only to realize that I miss measured twice! Now I have to order new rims when its in the budget, or get the cone shaped caps which I don't like as much. So new rims are in the future. |

Now that I have the deck, I can bring the baby outside and at least keep an eye on her. Kidding of course. I'm having trouble posting a new thread. I was hoping to get some help identifying a trailer we are picking up. THere are no lables on the trailer and I am unable to find pictures of similar ones. Can someone help me post a photo?? Just saw your picture in a new post. Good job! |

Well, if the paint is like Sundance (57 yellow 1500) it's not yellow! We mixed and mixed at the paint store to get a close color. Turns out it's slightly LIME. The hauler damaged Sundance in the rear and the paint was so nice everywhere else, we needed that match. Takes some effort, but you can do it! Attachments:

Vikx, I love those early 1500s! I need to talk to a few paint guys I know before we do a real car quality paint job. I'm just using the rattle can for a temporary fix.

I had much rather get our Shasta painted before Merl Fest.. I guess we'll just have to go with her old makeup until the first of May.  I want a good spray job too. If I am gonna pull all the rails, windows and trim for a polish and seal, I sure would love to have a good paint shot on.. But then I get to wrestle with my camper "Rule" - Don't drop a lot of money in this thing.. ;D |

Hamlet's glad it's staying yellow. If you had named her Miss Piggy, she'd have to be LAVENDER, not pink! YIKES!

Curious, what are you using to shine it up? We have what seems to be a flat paint on our '62. Not sure if it is perhaps not a flat paint and therefore can be brightened/polished up. Hoping so! Any tips?

If it's a '62 and the paint is original, it's NOT flat. Paints back then oxidized after just a few years. You'll need to use polish to remove the oxidation. Others can tell you what to use that won't harm the old paint (or as little harm as possible, anyway).

A good carnauba wax should bring out a good shine. I found a cleaner wax that seems to work well. I'll check the brand.

Any tips? I used Meguiar's Ultimate Compound from the auto parts store on my chalky paint and it shined up like new... Attachments:

Sundance has exceptional paint. It really wasn't chalky. We used 3M polishing compound from Napa and a rotary polisher. There's a few nicks but overall, it looks great for original paint.

Nope, our paint is not original. And it looks like they used flat paint for some reason. ?? Any suggestions as to what to use for polishing it?

If it's flat, it's not going to polish into something shiny. I'd still try a good polishing compound (Meguire's works) just in case.

Going with the black powder coat for now, which I think is how they originally came, but I want to paint them when I find the paint and the time. |
