Hello!
We're new to all of this, and we're just getting our first Shasta. It's a 196? 16 SCS with the rear entry. The wood is in good shape, except that the screws have little rust stains around each one. Is there any way to fix that?

Do you mean the outside screws, Amy, on the windows and trim?

No, on the interior. We haven't gotten it home yet, so they may have been rivets? The wood has a little rust stain around each one all over the interior.

Sounds like the screw nails have rusted. The only thing I could suggest is that you replace them with aluminum screw nails.

I think we'll definitely need to do that. Is that a common problem? Do you suggest anything for getting rid of the stains on the wood? I thought maybe a little dab of bleach, but I don't know if I'll create a bigger problem.

The rusty nails may be impossible to remove if they are twisty nails. You would do more damage to the panels getting them out than would be worth it. You may be able to paint the heads after you clean the panels. If the rust stains won't come out, a matching paint may touch the wood up as well.

Usually, there is a reason that the nails are rusted. These are what is refered to in the hardware store as meatal trim nails. They have a rounded head and a twist in the shank. You might want to check for any discolloration in the lower parts of the panels where they touch the floor. This could be a sign of some water intrusion, either through the roof or around the windows.

unless your trailer was in a humid climate which could lead to just the nail heads rusting...I agree with Angus that it may be a sign of moisture damage..... looking for other discoloration (usually lightening but sometimes darkening too especially lower) taking a peek under the skin down at the corners will tell you if you've got a problem. Also agree with Vikx those nails are a bxxxch to remove and may tear the paneling apart.
