Do you know of have an opinion on how close to original one has to be to be considered for antique plates? Forms from La state "must be 25 years old... maintained in its original condition, without significant changes to manufacturer's specifications."
Would replacing a bathroom in a 59 deluxe be considered "significant changes?" From what I understand about them, they were made per order. Maybe some didn't come with a bathroom to begin with. Your thoughts and opinions?
Other than the the color it is now and the bathroom (way to small and we'd rather have larger fridge in its place), we're going to get as close to original as possible.

Get your plates first, then modify!

Well my experiences with the DMV leads me to believing that they wouldn`t have any idea what was original in a vintage trailer other than the length, color and vin number. I agree with mobiltec, register it first, its what we do.

I don't think anybody here knows exactly how every trailer out there came from the factory so how would the DMV ? In our state if it looks similar to what might have been original that is close enough.

You hand me a 1973 Airstream and I can get that puppy registered tomorrow as a 41 Shasta as long as you don't report it stolen. That's why it's so important to get a title if you are going to spend over $200 on a trailer.

I'm working on the title. State trooper inspected today and he did look at more than just the vin. Looked inside and out, checked every door inside and out. Asked questions. Looked at copies of original brochure and such I had printed. Took his affidavit to a justice of the peace who completed more paperwork and faxed it to Baton Rouge.
Your sigh was very helpful, hamlet. Thanks.

my state (Arkansas) does not offer antique plates for Campers, just cars, either way I'd get them, no one is going to call you out on it for a few mods. the rule with antique plates in Arkansas on cars is you are not suppose to drive more than 2,500 miles a year or something of that nature.

Title arrived by mail today! Probably going to wait until we're close to finishing the work before getting a plate.

Here's something a lot of people in California INCLUDING the DMV don't know. If you have a 57 Shasta with Yellow Letters on Black Plate, most people say "it's got the "original" plates.... Not so. If you look at the back of ANY yellow on black plate, in the corner it will say 63.... No matter what year your trailer was first sold in. That's because in 1963 the DMV changed the plate styles from Black letters on Yellow background to Yellow letters on Black background and they made everyone turn in their old plates to get the new ones.
Most of the employees that I have talked to from our local DMVs here in so cal don't know that.

I remember when they did that. They had come to the end of the number sequence for the black on yellow plates and started with the yellow on black. It was almost a status symbol for the first few years because it meant you were well off enough to have a new car.
