So I just picked up the little trailer from Fresno I'm sure a couple of you will recognize.. She's in better shape than I thought! The front jalousie windows actually hve some aluminum around them, though it doesn't match the skin and isn't done right, it's at least done.. Decently. There's definitely some rot in the back, looks like everything under the window needs immediate attention. The skin is peeling up a little bit, but it looks like I can get it back together for now. The interior is gorgeous. Probably a 6-7/10. Rounded cabinets, most of it is in decent shape with a good sanding and re-stain. The back bed needs reframed and foam, it has a cot, with a couple small rips. The countertop and dinette are in good condition though a seat is ripped. The oven is clean inside and he says he was told it works, same for the fridge. It had a shore power plug someone wired in, not amazingly well, but it looks like it works. The rock guard needs sealed, but is in decent condition too. There's some water damage visible, under windows and a little bit around the vent, and some in the cabinet above fridge. All in all it's adorable and so far she's not swaying or anything, she's just chillin for the ride home to Orange County! From Bakersfield. (Eew.) Her vin is c7174 (I'm guessing that means 57?) Oh, and most importantly her name... I had a cat (he rescued ME, not the other way) who I named Lux Kittenterior, after Lux Interior of the Cramps. So.. My trailers name is Lux Intrailor !!! The damage at the bed is the only thing not quite salvageable, the rest looks like I can just refinish it Attachments:

Welcome!! I have a 1956 and yours looks like it could definitely be a 57....though if it's a 1500, there are some things that I haven't seen. Mobiltec is also working on a 57 and so I would check his thread and videos for sure. Hugh Currin also just finished a 56 or 57. Looks like a fridge not an icebox and the vent above it is also different. Is there a furnace in there too? On mine there is an icebox and cabinet above has a mirror. But the biggest things that are really different are the windows. For some reason I can't get your pics to enlarge, but those are not original 56 or 57 windows....All were awning windows or the dang fixed dinette windows. So these have been replaced with jalousies at some point along the way as was the front window. The thing you are going to have to check for is rot along the front and back corners under the skin where the edges meet. These years didn't have the return on the lower front and back skin below the awning rail which made them very prone to water being wicked down in there. I hope that your PO fixed this when the windows were changed....that would be great news for you if it was done correctly.

Schweeycruisers, I was expecting the worst.. It's ..not quite. So, better than expected!! The back is definitely gone. The skin is peeling, the frame is just not enough to keep the nails in, and the piece over the seam is gone, looks like one is on the bed.. The front seems ok.. For now, anyways. Gk- it's a fridge, which is rad. No furnace/heater though. I wish! The guy is selling it- he's had it a week- he's cleaning up property for someone else and selling everything on the property. He didn't really know much about it.. I'm def still learning!! It seems pretty solid, especially for an old one. Those windows were replaced..decently. If I re-skin it i may keep them? It's already been altered a bit.. Not sure. My theory is, if it's easily restorable to authentic, do it. If its already past that point, it's fair game to change a few things. It'll probably be more of a refurb/custom, but..I'm keeping the birch! I've just gotta get some help with the vin to make sure she is what she is! Ha!

But..the skins don't quite meet anywhere below the windows.. They're peeling both front and back.. At least I'll get her camp-able for now, and look at pulling her apart later. She's kinda my compromise with husband about camping all the time on jeep runs..

Hauswife, where the skins done meet on the edges front and back....you likely are gonna want to order new front and back skin a couple of inches wider than you are going to need and then bend over the edges so you can get a proper seal then add j rail. Hemet RV is the place to go adn please do watch mobiltec's video on restoring the shasta....it's destined to be a classic series.

Question is, if it's a 57, is it blasphemy to put wings on it?

Question is, if it's a 57, is it blasphemy to put wings on it? Not in my opinion! She has been around this long, giving numerous people pleasure, and still bringing a smile and pleasure to people, so I think that she deserves everything you can give her. From what I can tell, she has the true canned hammed shape and not the later toaster shape. She also has the rounded edged cabinets and although the spigot appears missing, she has the water cabinet above the sink , I believe she truly is a 57.

You can add wings if you want....it's your trailer. When you sell it if you do, it may turn off some potential buyers, but then if you keep things the way they are you already have some thigns about yours that are different from original......so do what makes you happy!

That's a water cabinet? Hmm.. Weird.
Yeah it seems like one of the po's made a few modification here and there.. I guess now it's just figuring out what's original, what work, etc.

(I think thats what I`m seeing in one of the pics above)It use to hold a metal container that one would fill with water for boon docking. The hole in the door was where the spigot stuck out.

Most took the water tank above the sink out. It makes sense if you think about....gravity feed to the faucet.

Canasta (57 Deluxe) had wings. They weren't original but may have been there in the beginning. She may have been a late 57/early 58. LOL.
Sundance and Butch Cassidy never had wings.

I just measured her and the trailer itself is 13', not counting the tongue.. What model would this make it?

I believe Butch and Sundance are 14'6" total. They are Shasta 1500s. Yours is probably a 57 1500.
