Someone asked me the other day what I thought was wrong with using a solid piece of aluminum skin for the top of a trailer and I answered with "I don't see anything wrong with it".
HOW EVER!
It's going to cost you a heck of a lot of money ordering a piece of aluminum skin that is 81 inches wide and 15 feet or more long. That's because they only make that size aluminum skin for large aircraft.... Good luck getting someone to sell it to you by the foot.
That's why 4 foot pieces are seamed together in such a way that they won't leak as long as you don't dent the seam.
UPDATED...
As seen below it IS possible to buy aluminum in 8 foot wide sheets so you CAN do an entire roof in one solid piece... Wish I had known that before.
Thanks Schweet!

My one piece roof was $281.00 w/tax. I priced the seamed roof as well, it was 430.00. This was the roof as I got it, 8ft wide and 16ft long- I did mine is November, it was like working with the surface of the sun, highly reflective and very hot to do on a sunny day!

Did you leave the skin smooth or did you put breaks in it? If you did put breaks in the sheet how did you do it? What gauge was the metal? Would love to see a picture of the finished product. Cheers.

I was told by my mentor that it could not be found anywhere cheap... I will have to correct my mentor...

OK I gave you some wrong info, I pulled the receipt for the roof, the seamless roof cost me $360.40 and the quote I got for the seamed roof was $455.00 plus tax.
The material is also 8.5ft wide.

Even so the main problem my friend was talking about was availability... He said they only made it wider for aircraft companies and that they didn't sell it in small quantities. Guess he was wrong and I will point this out to him.

Is there a problem getting the seams made at both ends to match existing Yeah it's impossible! I had to make a "S" lock seam at both ends to make it work, Tylerbes also did a one piece roof and had the same issue, although he did something else. One nice thing about a one piece roof is you can eliminate the two panels on each side of the rear window.
