The most important tool you will need for your project.

I take it the westerner is gone!
Don't really know if that's a tool or more of a rule! You can't do this correctly without some $$$ and more $$$!

:DFunny! Somewhere I saw a trailer for sale and the ad said it needed "TLC --- Tools, Labor, and Cash". My husband said pass on that one so instead we got a total restoration project (hey, at least it was free to buy)!

Like I say, if you don't want to drop too much money in your vintage camper, stand outside and throw your money at it. It works better!

Money has been flying out of my wallet ever since we got our "free" trailer. We keep using the, "at least it was free" line with each other but that is running out. I bet I am 100 hours into it already and only less than half done along with about $4000 in parts and upholstery and tires and custom baby moons and......but ya know what? haven't had this much fun in a long time. Feelin the addiction!
******Update: just totaled receipts...... $6700.... what have i done..... good thing I am not trying to sell her...

Tools labor and cash sounds about right!! ...at least my inheritance included a garage with every tool imaginable. Now if I could only convince my husband that he WANTS to do the labor...!

Try the Jedi mind trick..... Just wave your hand sort of slowly and gracefully and say, "You WANT to do the labor on this trailer." And mobiltec, yup, that's about right.

I just keep telling myself it's still a whole lot less and a whole lot better to have pride in the trailer I rebuilt that a souless new one coming off the line. Of course that tent I used to camp in...... no don't think about that.

To be honest, I prefer tent camping LOL... The main reason is I hate to tow anything here in So Cal. The drivers here are not just bad, they are evil... It's bad enough that they are all texting and talking on their cell phones, weaving across the lanes without knowing it and only looking up once about every ten minutes. But once you hook a trailer to the back of your vehicle, they start to aim for you. Cutting you off, not allowing you to merge, not allowing you to change lanes, forcing you to the shoulder, PASSING YOU ON THE SHOULDER and just about every other terrible thing they can think of while you are just moping along at 55 trying to be safe.

With all the rain up here, we most certainly were happy to relinquish the tent to the younger, more adventurous crowd. We actually prefer backpacking and getting away from people altogether, but that's no longer a possibility.
Mobiltec - we will have Hamlet in So Cal next month for a week or so on a business/pleasure trip. We spent many years there and know exactly what you mean by your comments about the traffic. I flew down and rented a car a couple months ago and by the time I had spent 4 days driving freeways from the Valley to the desert (la Quinta), I was ready for a week in the wilderness. Too bad we didn't get it!

Too bad we didn't get it! If you are not used to it, and I never seem to get used to it, I'm surprised you weren't ready for a year in mental therapy. It absolutely boggles the mind. On the tent versus trailer thing, I love the trailer when I'm in camp and bad weather hits. Just hate towing it there. Other than that, I'll take the tent until I can no longer climb in and out on my knees. And that time seems to be coming soon so I'm glad I have a few trailers. I think I will end up with the perfect combination. An 18ft Kenskill fully self contained and a Teardrop. The Teardrop will be capable of 4wd type travel. Best of both worlds depending on what I'm doing and where I'm going. And then there are still the tents. I have a few of them. My friend has a tent for his dog. It was one of those little model tents you see in the stores and he has a small dog. Pretty neat.

I actually tent camp on anything less than a couple of nights, and my favorite is actually a cot under the stars next to a river on a multi day wilderness rafting/kayaking trip. I gave up backpacking when I realized I could raft/kayak into even more remote areas than I was ever willing to walk to, and carry all the yummy food and creature comforts (the cot) without having to carry it.

That's true. I have done some slow river trips and camped out. Done rubber rafts and canoes but not in fast water. But yes it does get you to places that trails don't go. And I can carry a cooler full of food and beer and my fishing equipment.
Then I got into four wheeling... Dirt Rafting LOL...
I want to put up some posts about tools here. I just need the time so I will be doing that when I am done with the Shasta. It's almost done now. Every day is a struggle to get it comleted.

Gone Kayaking, Mobiltec, Here's something you might appreciate considering you like river runs and working with 1/8 inch plywood restoring Shasta's. This was my project a couple winters ago. It's made from 3mm Okoume hull with a Sapele deck then fiberglass and epoxy. Another fun project. h

Nothing makes this woodworker feel inferior like a hand made wood boat, or in this case a canoe! Nice job!

Thanks guys, I have some hours into it for sure, but really it wasn't that hard to do. I bought the panels from company that laser cuts them. After that, you build it using a stitch and glue process, then fiberglass/epoxy. Then a lot of sanding and marine varnish. Maybe about 50 hours...nothing compared to these shasta restorations. Schweet, it has nothing on the craftsmanship you put into your trailer.

Dang it smccusk that's what we in the construction industry used to refer to as a "Piano".. Beautiful for sure. I've always admired boat builders. Talk about things lining up correctly... A trailer has a very little chance of sinking.

persimmonpal, I think you are on to something... restoring these things has to be a Labor of Love or why else would we do this to ourselves?

Well I don't know about you people but I do it because I'm too poor to pay someone else to do it. And it's fun when you don't do it for a living. When you do it for a living it's just work.

I was told by a old timer when I started carpentry that "the mark of a true craftsman is not how well they builds something, it's how well they hide their mistakes!"
