Does anyone around the Boston area know of a place to get Birch 4X8's from? ? We are willing to travel a little.

Not sure, but you may want to call Boulter Plywood in Somerville mass.. They have a great selection of stuff.

We did contact them and they do carry what seems to be good quality Birch for $39/sheet. We were thinking 14 sheets...OUCH. we may rethink that and see what we can save!!!!!! I was just trying to see if there was another option!!!

Are you sure you have birch? Some if not most Astrodome/Astroflyte's had Ash interiors. If you don't know the differance post a picture here and I can tell you what you have.

Try posting a photo here from photo bucket or another online server. I don't do facebook so I can't see your photo. But at that price you had better make sure you are matching what is in the trailer. We can tell the difference between Ash and Birch really easy if you post a photo. Also, the ash used back then was Japanese Ash. Almost impossible to find today. At least I have had a big problem trying to find it. I think if I were going to completely repanel any trailer that had Ash I would go with Birch. You can recover the cabinet doors and drawers with it too. Birch looks so much better than Ash.

Link doesn't work! It doesn't matter what you have if your going to redo the entire trailer, but if your only going to replace certain panels you'll want to make sure that it all matches.

Are you going to replace the birch from the outside or the inside?

I am going to replace the panels from the inside, I know you like doing it from the outside but we really do not have the area to remove the skin.. and from what I can see I think the only leaks were the vents.. like the were left open and over time the ceilings buckled and got warped ..
Do you have any thoughts? We are just replacing the last rear ceiling panels, the sides look 50 years old but in good shape with no water damage. The flooring is solid and the roof beams "if you can call them that" are not rotted or wet... I will be replacing the roof beams with redwood to strengthen the roof line from sagging..
This is our second trailer but first with panel replacement.
Thanks Peter / Nancy

Oh I see by your sig line that you had an Ace Traveler. Neat little trailers. My friends have one that I was supposed to help with but I think they are moving away now so I guess they will do it themselves.
I've never replaced a ceiling panel from the inside although I have seen it done a lot. If it's only the one panel that the top vent is in I can kinda go along with it because it's just one panel. Anymore and I feel that the trailer is weakened. And when you are talking dome trailers, it's even more important to have all the structural integrity you can get. Side panels are fine if you can tet them to fit right and slide them up under the welting or gimp if you will... Just my thoughts... The top skin is a bit big of a thing to store while doing it being that it is all one long piece seamed together so I understand your dilema. When I did the Deville I had the same problem so I constructed a frame to hold the top skin up two feet over the trailer while I worked on it. I was able to raise and lower the skin with a very simple system of ropes and 2x2s and a couple pieces of ABS 2 1/2 inch pipe. You might want to check out the early videos of the Deville I have on my website. Remember you only have to do this once.

I did see your video and you make it look so simple.. We are in a driveway with no way of building that type of system... What would you think about cutting out the water damage pieces... Not the whole sheep just the damage and going over them with new 1/8 in birch.. That way we don't loose any of the original support... The damage is really just birch bubbling .. There is no rot but at some point it got damp and bubbled..
Wish you were closer, could make a video of the Astroflyte..
Thanks
PS. We still have the ACE, she is rock solid... and all original.. except for the mods... Fridge and new cushions

Larry, I have come to the decision that the roof should come off... Going to be some work but I think the finished product will be worth it... If your going to do it, you should do it right...

You'll be glad you did. It's the proper way to do it. And I'll bet you find more wood damage than you thought you would. Take photos and keep us up to date on your progress. I've found that when you have to remove the top, it's best to just keep working and get it done and back together as quickly as possible. Don't let it set...
