Squirreldad is also working on a vintage trailer. His has a pair of brackets clamped to both sides of the tongue. We have been using them to hang the chains. But I'm sure that is not what they are meant for.

My '64 frolic has brackets much like those that are for the anti-sway bars.

That would be correct. They are the snap brackets for connecting the chains of the sway bars. I do not think my '64 had them on but my '70 did.

Those are the brackets for a Reese equalizing hitch you had spring bars that hooked to the hitch on the tow vehicle then you had chains that went from the back of those bars to the brackets in the picture and it transfered part of the tongue weight back on to the trailer. The old advertising pictures showed a front wheel drive ( Olds tornado I think pulling a trailer with the rear wheels of the car removed), just to show how well the hitch would transfer the weight. properly adjusted it allowed you to tow with the car and trailer level with each other. You let the hook down to fasten the chain then you had a small pipe that you used to pull it back up then inserted the lock pin.
