I just finished reframing a Scotty and learned some things came to some conclusions about my newfound knowledge decided to incorporate it into the astrodome rebuild and thought Id pass it on here.
Wheew that's a mouthful
Sorry cant post pictures any mre U will have to follow my composition to get the gest of it. If what I am saying does not make sence email me Ill send U volumes of pictures
Scottys have solid 1/2 in plywood left and right wall combined with framing for the front roof and rear walls.
This makes stronger camper and much easier to rebuild way way quicker for sure but still room for even more improvement.
I increased the side walls to 3/4 and routered datos on the inside face where cabinates and cleats attatch the difference in the 2 thicknesses where the wall attatches to the floor too so when assembled it did not come out 1/2 in wider than original making the skins short. This turned out GREAT the walls are 3/4 and thicker to the inside where it was of no effect. The additional routing it took was nominal and easy to lay out.
The Astrodome will get the same treatment but changing from 1 by left and right walls to solid 3/4 ply will not need any routing to skinny it up any like the scottys that originally are ony 1/2 in ply walls left and right.
Here is the process Im going forward with.
I will use the skins as templates and lay 4 pieces of 3/4 ply on the garage floor lay the side skins on that and trace. The Ply will go right to the edge of the skin so when the front ceiling and rear framing members go in they WILL NOT attatch to the outer edge of the side walls but only butt up to the inside faces of the left and right wall. Cut the profile with a jigsaw and the windows and doors get a circular saw plunge cut.
Stop and think about that right there how long do U think it would take U to put 4 pieces of ply on the ground put the skins on them, trace, cut and reattatch to the floor framing. Badda bing badda bang.
This will completely eliminate all the dumb curved wood pieces normally needed between the 1 by framing that incidently will be changing to 2by2 as well.
Qiucker easier stronger.
To insulate the sidewalls and address the inside corners were the gimp is Ill do this.
Scottys sandwich thin very thin fiberglass between the skins and the plywood sides porviding practicly no insulation. I have a simple solution for the Astrodome follow me
After outer framing is in the ceiling panels go in next but from the inside and they will just butt up at the corners at the top of the left and right walls. To burry the edges after the ceiling panels are in THEN I insulate the inside of the left and right walls with 1/2in pink rigid insulation on the inside and cover that with 1/8 in birch. That burrys the ceiling edges insulates the walls berrer and easier.
Just as an example the ENTIRE left wall of the scotty the first one I did took a whopping 1 day to complete. I day. The right wall took a wopping 4 hr with the experience benhing me. How long do U think it would take to completely rebuild a side wall on a astrodome doing it the same as original. Ill tell U WAY LONGER Ill be getting that done before lunch and it will be the strongest astrodome in the country when Im done no more friggin 1by framing either.
Im going to do the floor in 3/4 too here is the shopping list for a complete reframe
that's 12 sheets of 3/4
5 sheets of white fiberglass ceiling panels
10 sheets 1/8in birch and
2 dozen 8ft 2 by 2
Just a quick look at this is 1000 to 1200 in materials maybe another 300 in fastners. That's the number Ill carry forward around 1500 for material for framing give or take 10%
