Heading off to Colorado on Friday morning. First I will be working on this 59 Forester. I will be removing the entire top, front and rear metal in order to replace all of the birch under there. Also going to do one or two side wall panels as far as I know. Easier when the top is off. I will also be replacing the rear lower metal as you can plainly see in the photo. Too much to patch. That would be a lot of bondo LOL.
When I complete this project for Jim, I will be headed to Salida Colorado to work on a Dalton. I'll start a new thread for that one.
Here's the Forester.

Purplepeep, just what I was thinking!!! Get a nice big old Spartan Royal Mansion that has the back half made into a rolling workshop, with living quarters, etc in the front... THAT is the life!

Mobil, get hooked up with a network for a new show! You could call it "This Old Camper" The network would pay for all expenses of course, including deluxe accomidations. You'll be famous! Lets see, you could get Craig to sponser...

Mobil, get hooked up with a network for a new show! You could call it "This Old Camper" The network would pay for all expenses of course, including deluxe accomidations. You'll be famous! Lets see, you could get Craig to sponser... My skydiving career has caused me to touch bases with the networks and Hollywood. Can't stand those people. They are ruthless, greedy, back-stabbing, cocain crazed idiots who run around making millions while paying their "hero" (that would be me) a mere pittance.
There is a guy right here in Riverside, California who is "hooked up" with them right now doing a vintage trailer restore "reality" show. You will be seeing it soon. But he has a shop so he is stuck here in the armpit of California. The name of his company is "The Canned Ham Man". Nice guy and he does average work. I have seen much better on this board by people who do this as a labor of love and not for money.
All of that being said, if they were to sign a contract with me where they have absolutely NOTHING to say about what ends up on the boob tube as a final production, and I got to pick the customers and trailers I work for and on, and I make the schedule, I might consider it. But that is not how they work. Chris (the canned ham man) said that they are already telling him to lie and trying to throw all this scripted drama into the act. He told them he will NOT lie for them. I wouldn't either. I personally know two different people who are doing these "reality" shows now so I know of what I speak.
Yes my endeavors would make for a great show and that is what You Tube is for. Besides, I'm not really into fame. I'm old and just want to travel around and meet nice people like you folks and be able to pay for it all by doing little jobs like these two in Colorado. It's the only way I will be able to retire. A working retirement. But my work is fun so it really isn't considered work. I consider myself more of an artist than a worker.
So with that in mind I plan to be in the cold states in the summer and in the warm states in the winter.
PERFECT!

That's kinda what I was thinking but not a Royal Mansion. Just too dang big. And I don't need a "shop" per-say. Just a place to carry my tools. That can be my one ton van and I can pull a nice little SC trailer behind. I just happen to have an 18 foot 59 Kenskill sitting here I'm working on that I could use for that.

When we're ready to go back to "birch" I hope you'll be ready for a trip to Santa Barbara. Oh I love that area. I used to be stationed at Vandenburg AFB for a while. I also love everything all the way north of there. The central coast is my favorite. I would like to live there. I could do SB in the winter also but any time of year is great there.

'Tec you are an inspiration. Doing whatever you feel like is right for you, and doing it on your own terms. Your a truly successful person. Bravo and cant wait to see the video of the old trailer that belonged to the older woman. (The one which you offered to help with some work on it in exchange for a tour and the story of it)... Everybody has a story!

Thanks PM... Yep that little trailer will not only be fun to work on, but really fun to see and learn the history behind it. You are right. Every trailer has a story. I'll be getting in on that as soon as I return from CO.

Left my home in Riverside, CA. this morning at around 4am. 110 miles into the trip I lost the tread on one of the trailer tires. All the way down to steel belt. This is my Dico not a canned ham. So being that the tire was still holding air I got off the freeway and parked in the lot of an America's Tires and waited for everyone to show up. I was able to remount the fender that was hanging by one screw while I waited. I don't know if the tread coming off disloged the fender or if the fender disloged and wore on the tire... They both had lots of tread but they were about 4 years old so as you see, tread makes no difference. Change your tires every 3 years whether they have tread or not. Real trailer tires would have lasted 5 years but they wont fit on this trailer. I need to get bigger fenders and mount them up higher so I can put TRAILER TIRES on my Dico.
They showed up for work and I got two new tires. Everything is OK now except that I have to go to McDonalds to get wifi because the stupid motel I checked into has WIFI but it's broken and they didnt tell me when I registered. Geeeesh.
Also got stuck in a HUGE traffic jam in the middle of the Vegas Freeway due to a huge pile up that only left one lane open. That was fun and it's hot as hell here. Had to shut down the AC for a while getting through that.
So far so good eh?
More later when I get to my next stop. Let's hope the rest of the trip goes a little better.

Well you are on your way....hopefully murphys law is done with you and the rest will be smooth sailing. Well things are changing already. I finally talked the motel manager into letting me out of the deal and went and found another crappy motel that at least had wifi. And it's a good thing I was able to pull off the freeway at a place where there was population so I could get new tires for the Dico. So far I actually feel pretty lucky seeing as how the accident I went through in Vegas involved 8 cars and two motorcycles. Phew... Missed that one by a mile and a quarter. One of the vehicles was a van pulling a small U Haul about the size of my Dico and it was all jacknifed in the middle of the freeway. Real bad scene.

Here's what happens when your tires get too old. I was lucky that the tire held air. Almost lost the fender. They didn't have very many miles on them and look what happened. Just from age. 4 years I think.

Wow....how much do you think being exposed to the weather had to do with it? My tires are almost 3 years old, have about 15,000 on em, but they look great still. Thinking I need to change before next season after seeing this. The PO put brand new radials on ....passenger tires not trailer. Will get trailer when I replace.

Trailer tires usually don't wear out, they fail from UV exposure, dry rot, over/under inflation-which causes excessive heat, and over or improperly load trailers.

Not to mention Chinese manufacture. I don't recall any trailer tires ever failing like that in the old days, when you could buy USA-made ones. I am sure it happened, but they have become throw-away just like everything else we can buy today.

These were definately from exposure and age. Lots of tread and very low miles. Maybe 2000 tops. And they were steel belted car radials. I have to put larger fenders on to get a real Trailer Tire on there or I would have done it at the time of the installation of the new ones.
And remember folks. It pays to check everything with a complete walk around every time you move your trailer. Even if you just stopped for breakfast like I did.
