Also need to find something to use for spacers. I was thinking of cutting plastic conduit to the right thickness. Or would like to find some solid plastic dowel if it's available. Anyone know? You did a fine job on those wings. Do you have any pictures of the edge? What kind of nails did you use? If you covered that and I missed it my apologies. I would look into a hard rubber spacer. They sell a bunch of different sizes at hardware stores. Another option would be to make spacers out of stainless tubing that you find at hardware stores. Just hack up the size that you need out of the length. You could also add rubber or urathane washers to cut down on any damage from vibration. Brian

I used the twist nails for nailing down alumnimum thresh hold(sp?) on house floors. I used ones made from nickel so they won't rust. I used a plastic/PVC pipe that is supposed to be a toilet/sink inlet pipe for the spacers. It's gray and about the same diameter as the orginal ones I have off of a newer set of wings. I'll get some pictures of the edges. The first one I built isn't so hot (on the edge) because I took it back apart, but the 2nd one turned out really good.

"Anybody know if the anodizing of the metal that VTS sells will effect my ability to temper the aluminum in order to make it able to make the bends?"
Hey JoeK, I know this is an old post and you may have gone past this point ... anyway,
Anodizing is basically a surface treatment done to aluminum, kind of like plating. when you anodize you can actually make different patterns of color by masking and re-anodizing with dyes.
What will happen if you heat the anodized alum. to the point of "annealing " or( to make the metal soft and plyable) is the anodized surface can burn off or crackle. and if the metal was "tempered", it will become "annealed" Working or bending the metal so it becomes hard to bend (work hardening) can also wear through the anodized surface exposing the bare alum. As far as it goes non of the surfaces on the wings needs to be tempered for strength. hope that helps.
