Well, I think I have found a replacement for my damaged 64 Compact. This one is available but as you can see someone has replaced the door with a heavy duty RV door. Do you think it looks okay or should I try to put the original door back on? As you can see, they cut really high up and I think they also made it wider. Could it be framed in and rebuilt? The inside is the style with the lounge across the back. It is quite roomy inside. There is no table right now. They also took out the cubbie on the left side.

Here is a closeup picture of the door. It is a pretty secure door. Attachments:

Anybody have any ideas on how I could put the original door back on?

It would take quite a bit of work to go back to the original door configuration since the opening has been enlarged and materials removed. Reframing would not be too difficult to do but how do you plan to add back the siding that is gone without it looking hokey??
I would say that unless this door is solid and well done AND you can enjoy the trailer as is, then go for it. If you want an original door, then pass on this one and keep looking.

I know it does sound like a lot of work, but I do have a totaled 64 that I am using the parts from. I met a guy last weekend that rebuilds them, I will check with him.

If you are not a stickler for original, then I think this door looks kind of cool!I like original but it isn't an eyesore or anything to me! Janet

I've seen that I think on Craigslist and wondered about the door. Umm, if it were me I'd want the original door. However, I do think it would be an undertaking to take it back to original w/o it looking funny. But maybe your rebuild guy could swing it?

Okay, I have to forget about that idea! Too much work. I am now back to looking for a new canned ham. I am looking all over the north and west and southwest. Anyone out there have any leads, let me know. I really want an early 60's compact. Thanks.

Mindyrose your next Compact is going to have a hard act to follow based on your total satisfaction with your original one. Your diligence and patience will be rewarded. This Compact would not have been the right replacement had you kept the door that is now on it, and as you said, it would have been a lot of work to put your other door on it in an acceptable way. All you could have done was completely replaced the top half of the skin on that side after re-framing and adjusting the inside paneling too...lots of professional personhours and more money than it was worth. The PO took the easy way out by putting that larger door on that Compact, but changed the appearance too much for my taste. Keep on keeping on in your search!! Vikx's post would have left me running from this one, even if I could have gotten past the door, unless it was offered at just a bit more than a give-away price. I'll be sure to let you know if I spot Mindyrose's next Compact!

There are at least 2 (I think) compacts for sale on ebay ... similar to the one you have. There's one that's pepto bismol pink in fact.

Thanks, I saw that one. I am just not into pink that much. I am now wanting an earlier model. There is still the 68 in Portland and Santa Rosa, CA too.
