well after looking for a while for a Shasta, and seeing lots of pics online, it makes me wonder, why are all the wings gone off of them?
People had to have always known they were cool, right?
did they cause leaking problems or something?
I'll be purchasing my 1st shasta Wednesday, and my first project will be to try and find a pair of wings.

From what I understand, some never had them.

And a lot of those that had them--they rotted off. Or the knucklehead backing up the trailer knocked them off with a tree or a carport.

Most Shastas had wings. The ones without were in later years and less than ones with.
To answer the question... No. Not everyone digs wings.
Styles change. Tastes change. Things like wings look dated 15 or 20 years after you buy a trailer and there are new models out there that look different from your old trailer. I love old things. I can't say that all people love old things. Now Shastas are cool. 20 years ago they weren't. I see people ripping out awesome features in Mid Century homes. People did unspeakable things to classic cars in the 80's. Not everyone cares.
Also these are lightweight aluminum things screwed to the sides of a trailer. If ANYTHING is going to get damaged (maybe besides window glass) it would be those things. Most people pitch them if they get bent up.
My PO ditched his wings 20 years ago. Or at least that is what he said. I didn't ask why. I assume he just didn't like em. Maybe they got bent up. Who knows.
If you are looking for originals get your check book ready. They go for big bucks. Most make their own.

I think someone who had some foresight but not enough money to corner the gold or silver markets knew the wings would be very valuable and went around and bought up as many sets as possible...he/she who controls the wings RULES!!

check out this site, it's great! www.freewebs.com/kc8jwa/wings.htmOriginal wings are expensive, and this is a great alternative. My shasta no longer had it's original wings, but it did have the holes in the exterior where they were. I plan on using this tutorial to make my own.

I have been wondering about this also. I think Bruce is right. There is a secret stash of wings someplace. Someone must have heard rumors?? Or a treasure map? They can't be all just gone.

Thought I would throw my 2 cents in on this . They started adding the wings at the end of the automotive design period where every car, boat, and everything with a motor had wings or fins in the tail (i.e. the 57 chevy). Well that design trend ended and yet Shasta kept the wings on their campers. My thought is that people had moved on and the fins on their new camper seemed out of touch and gaudy, so they took them off. Easy to do when they just bolt on. This along with all the other rot and damage issues made them a rare item. .... not for much longer if I can help it

Well, this will no doubt get me banned, but I kinda think they look silly... If mine had still had any I would have been tempted to take them off too...

I like 'em better on the older rounder campers, but not that much, lol. Maybe I'm just too young to appreciate the old-timey stuff, I'm only 51... ;D

I suspect many ended up on the side of the road. My 61 compact has original wings but the screws were so badly rusted ( some completely disentigrated) I'm surprised I made it home without them flying away.

Cowcharge!!!... wow. I am with Exports on this one... I am only 36 and I have dedicated HUGE amounts of my time to recreate these wings. So you cant play the "too young card".A Shasta fan who doesnt like the wings.... I have seen it all. You must appreciate their leak proof design and solid construction techniques (insert eye roll here). I will give you this, you have guts my friend

Vikx, we thought it was pretty obvious too, but NO, people have to come up will all sorts of other unlikely explanations. Somewhere out in the ionosphere, there are thousands of pairs of wings fluttering around amidst the aurora borealis, happily free from their constraint and servitude.

I'm 35 and the main reason I sought out a Shasta was the wings. Cowcharge you might be on your own on this one!

Yes Tyler, it was not only the leak-proof design and fine, robust construction techniques that drew me, but also the luxurious glow of fine 1970s master finish woodworking, and the rich babysh- I mean Harvest Gold of the premium bathroom fittings.
LOL Schweet, I'm always on my own, in everything. I ended up with a Shasta by pure luck of the draw (price). I didn't even know they HAD wings when I bought the thing. In my pre-pricing fantasies I wanted a big shiny Airstream (now THAT will really get me banned). But hey, after I started reading here I figured I'd be shunned for having a '76 anyway...

The wings are what make the trailer. I am still waiting to go get mine in 60 days. We are going to camp all the way across the United States for 3 weeks. I have to drive to east coast to get my 59' Shasta Airflyte.

Love the idea of all those wings above us, just floating around.

Just a litte Comet and a scrub brush and you will have those fixtures looking like new... assuming that looking like new will make them look better... might just take off the paper thin harvest gold plating This has been an entertaining thread. Cowcharge you stay you! and Vikx,.... wings in the sky? Hmmm that isn't a cigarette in your hand is it?

Vikx and Hamlet are just fine, thank you, and our propensity toward the, well, odd, just shows that oddness isn't the monopoly of those of us on the Left Coast. Wait... Vikx, you're not a Left Coaster too, are you?

Isn't a propensity toward the odd a requirement here?

Is there a way to install them so that you can take them off and store when not traveling? (I've heard of them being stolen right off the trailer) Don't want to spend money or time just to have some criminal ruin my day.

Didn't think about that, Kathleen, it'd take some kind of heavy duty cutter to get the ones off Hamlet, and then, they might not come off undamaged. I suppose anything's possible these days, but I'd hate to see Hamlet without them. He'd look sort of underdressed.

Kathleen, IF you were worried about theft, you could mount them with tamper resistant screws. THey make screw heads that require special tools to remove like Square drive, pin-in-torx, spanner, etc... The trick is finding them in the right size. But they are out there if you are really worried about it.

Some people apparently don't understand the facination with the wings, kind of like I simply do not understand the growing number of people who have a fascination with tattoos...in saying that, if I ever go bald, I AM going to have shasta style wings tatooed to each side of my head...go figure!
