I'm just curious. Given the choice i like to plan far in advance so i can use my vacation as needed through the year. I would like to see the Mckinney camp out be an annual event. We had a great time at the "1st" annual Vintage Shasta/Airstream Rally There has been talk of a swap meet of parts/camping gear. The potluck was a huge success, i would think we would want to do that again. Of course the tour to see all the campers. First weekend in November 2012 will be the 3rd (Sat) Should we plan for this weekend? I know there were some members that were further away that might attend given that they have an 11 month notice ;D So i for one am going to reserve a spot, Harrison429 has to celebrate "not so secret anymore" birthday somewhere. Might as well be with a bunch of vintage camper nuts So who is up for a great fall campout on a beautiful lake enjoying the sounds of nature (and trains) for those of you who didnt make the first trip, here is a link to info on Mckinney Campground www.recreation.gov/camping/Mckinney_Campground/r/campgroundDetails.do?contractCode=NRSO&parkId=71289&topTabIndex=Search

We booked today for 4 days at HardridgeCreek at the end of May. We would love to book for this also but I think its a little too far for us. I`ll have to check it out. Sound like you guys have too much fun.

i tried to book online and even though it allows you to pick a date 1 yr in advance when you submit it tells you date must be before may something.
so i guess we have to wait till then to book?
does anyone know any different?

No less than 4 days prior, no more than 6 months in advance. We had to wait until this week to book for the end of May.

grrrrrr.... the world is against early planners..... guess im waiting till April/May You`ll be ok . Why not book now for Memorial Day weekend. You could have an, Annual Spring Rally and an Annual Fall Rally. Due to the distance, we couldn`t make it to both every year but we would make more than an effort to make it to at least one. Just a thought, happy planning!

An annual rally would be great but my vote would be not at McKinney or at least not at McKinney at that time of year. The current year gathering was pushed so late because everyone was new to the idea and still working on their currently purchased trailers. As everyone knows we found the gale winds to be too much of a challenge (thankfully it went away for our dinner) plus we didn't even get to use the lake (too cold, windy) and there was no beach area . For our fall gathering how about we meet up in Sept or early Oct and/or find another park?

We found a nice Beach area and a Playground, down a separate little road at McKinney, if a gathering is planned there when it is warm outside. I was also told there is a picnic pavilion, but we never found it. We also explored other loops that had more campsites and bigger bathrooms yet still had mostly lake front sites but more protected from the brutal wind.

Im open to whenever. I agree that wind was harsh but could end up with that sept/oct as well. You could have used the lake if your paddles wernt holding up the wind screen Open to suggestions, we have time to plan/take pole etc this go around I liked the reserveable campsite # so that usually rules out state parks.... Or as Kristi said maybe we choose a different loop there...

How about the mountains in the fall? Maybe a place without trains or Atlanta traffic...

Anybody have any more thoughts about this? Im planning out the rest of the year and reserving sites like they are free. Really would like to attend the fall rally but would need to pin down some dates at the very least, location would be great too.
I like the early-mid october range if that works for other people (since i think the concensus was november was a bit cold (especially with the wind))
A couple of parks have been suggested
Unicoi has been suggested (State park so particular sites cannot be reserved ( i dont think))
Sweetwater creek has been suggested and looks good too BUT according to its site closes in early September.
If were doing it in October i think Mckinney would be fine. Some folks didnt like the train, i personally didnt hear it but were used to it living less than a mile from one anyway.
No matter what the campground (assuming you can reserve your particular site) the earlier we start reserving the better chance you will have in all being together.
Ive never been a huge fan of Unicoi (unless your there to see Helen), the campground just doesnt offer much and your just sitting in the woods. They do have a lake but its small and no sites on the lake. I prefer campgrounds with trails and love to be on the lake.
So lets come up with a place to go? a date perhaps? even if we block out 2 weeks that would help. What is everyone else thinking on this?
If we get something set in stone we can invite folks from other sites as well, Airstreams/Avions, TCT etc etc.
You can always cancel it if the time gets closer and you cant make it. The cancellation fee is only $10 bucks.
Thoughts, comments, suggestions?

We are up for anything in October! Count us in!!
If we go to McKinney and anyone is bothered by the train, I will bring enough earplugs for everyone. Seriously, we have LOTS of new earplugs around here.

Ok guys the time has come to announce the official dates for the Rally. Looked into some other parks and considered some state parks but fell back on Mckinney again. We (and a few others) liked this park and decided to give it a shot again. The dates for this rally are Thurs 10-11-12 (or Fri 10-12-12) to 10-14-12. We decided to set up shop over on the marina side of the park (at the suggestion of last years organizer). We camped there again last month and checked out the sites. We are looking at the 1-57 look (over towards the teens/20s). sites 31-40 are walk up only according to online Some of these sites have direct access to the lake, directly into the marina area (which is no wake zone) so anyone with a kayak etc can go out without being on the main lake if they dont want too. Of course your welcome to stay ANYWHERE in the park you like. Events etc have not been planned yet but we have a few ideas of some activities that could be done if people want to participate. We were told these sites have a tendancy to fill up quick so those of you who can plan in advance should go ahead and book. (if you think you are interested go ahead and book. you can always cancel before that weekend and your only out $10) Everyone is welcome. Vintage (or Retro trailers if you must use that awful term) are prefered. Open to everyone LInk to mckinney info www.recreation.gov/camping/Mckinney_Campground/r/campgroundDetails.do?contractCode=NRSO&parkId=71289&topTabIndex=SearchI started us off and booked site 27 for ourself.

We just booked site #21! So excited for another McKinney Rally!
Be sure to book soon, if your plans change it won't cost much to cancel. Offspringin is correct about the cancellation fee. I had to cancel at McKinney a couple weeks ago and got a refund minus $10.

Yippee...here we go again!! Only this time we have an official rally master...thanks offspringin for taking over. We've booked site #22, hopefully the trees we'll be tucked behind will keep those damn gale winds away from me!! ;D We just camp back from camping there a couple of weeks ago and made notes on lots of sites. The little loop area (14-22) is nice and cozy, no one will be far from each other at all (but its not too close either) and it will be an easy walk to the water with no rocks! Let's just hope the marina boat launching area (other side of cove) will maintain our water level (as in they haven't dredged their side and our side will be dry ). Site 28 is nice, nice, nice right on the water and near the beach...I was afraid for potential wind so I'll let someone else be brave and grab that site.

These sites are further away from the train too (I think) for those of you who were bothered by the cho-cho. Come on everyone, grap these sites before we get surrounded by the modern, boring, big RVs!
Lots of activities in the planning (right Offspringin?). This will be lots of fun!

It's a secret right now ('cause I haven't worked out the details) but I'm definitely going to have some textile related activity for anyone who is interested.

If anyone thinks they may want to attend, make your reservations soon. Campgrounds fill up quickly in October - that's when the leaves are changing color. Very popular time to camp!

dates are the same. i dont know why they are reading OCT 1 in some titles.... i suspect it is just not displaying the entire title becuase of length? should be the very top title "Topic: 2nd Annual South Fall Rally 12' Mckinney OCT 11-14" i see what your referencing though "Re: 2nd Annual South Fall Rally 12' Mckinney OCT 1"

Thanks Offspringin! I realised after I posted that it must be to do with the length. Its quite a trip for us but I think we may make it. Sounds too much fun to pass up lol. Gotta wait a while and see what`s going on with visitors this year. We have several family members who visit every year from England and naturally I cater to their dates first. Although......... we could book and then cancel if need be. I did look at the site last night.
