I am planning to purchase an airflyte from someone who is already working on her. The vent on top has had leakage and the wood is rotted. His original plan was to remove and patch over so there would be no vent. Is this ok or should I have one reinstalled?
Will it be too hot?
I'm so excited....I think the hardest part will be the color!

I think you'd definitely want a vent there. I wondered about this before too but I believe the consensus was having a vent is needed.

a roof vent is great for venting heat, as heat rises, the only way I would not want one, is if I new I would always be camping where I had electricity and good air conditioning in the camper.
on a not so hot day you can open the windows and the vent and keep the camper cool enough, but once it gets hotter AC is needed, but you can also run the AC with the vent open and help push the hot air out the top.
since the hole is already there, might as well have a vent, that would be easier than patching the hole as well.

i vote replace too! we did ours and put the maxxair cover on top (takes away from vintage look but its ok) we leave the windows cracked and the vent because it has the cover is always open 100%

I took the vent out of my compact. That was the only place where the roof had leaked. I also took the stove out and I figured with the vent to one side and sort of above the stove, it was probably mostly a benefit for removing heat and such from cooking. When I rebuilt the camper I insulated walls and ceiling with rigid Styrofoam. I did install an a/c unit so staying cool is no issue. Camping in mild weather we can open windows and get great cross breeze. Opening the bunk window is just about as high as the roof vent was and don't have to worry about leaks. It's like any thing else, it's what works for you and your type of camping. Just my view.

If it were installed properly, I don't see why a roof vent would leak any more than a roof patch... unless you left it open.

Consider a 12 volt Fantastic Vent Fan. They really move the air and cool without A/C. I love mine. The customer service of this company is unsurpassed: they will send you parts for free in most cases. No questions, just: address please, it will be in the mail tomorrow. GREAT Fans and great company!
