So the PO slathered my Astrodome with silicone, in some spots it was 3/4" thick and in other spots it was applied with a brush. I tried the 3M remover with out great results, I than tried the McKanica Silicone remover that Vintage Trailer Supply sells, it worked but it was a pain to use on vertical surfaces and took too long(2-3 Hours min). After doing some Goggle Searches I found this stuff, its called DSR-5, its really expensive but it works. In my tests, it takes less than 5 minutes, its a liquid spray instead of a gel so applying it was easy. Here's the link for the manufacture and the place I bought it from, I think after shipping it was just over $50.00 for a quart, But hey it works and won't damage the paint. www.dsr5.com/www.tools4solidsurface.com/DSR-5-Silicone-and-Adhesive-remover..htmlOh, just an FYI, I have no affiliation with either the Manufacture or the Retailer.

Its pretty good stuff, I sprayed my hand by accident and it didn't burn or have any adverse effects. I won't say it smells great, but I think the McKanica smells worse. I think Vintage Trailer Supply should sell it. DSR-5 is by and far better then the stuff they sell.
Again I have NO affiliation with this company its just really cool I don't have to use as much elbow grease to take off all the Silicone the PO put on my trailer. It made my day!

This may be the salvation I have been looking for. I have two windows and a vent that is slathered with the stuff. Pricey....yes but I am going to give it a try. It has to be better then what I have been doing and looks a heck of a lot safer. Thanks our59deville.blogspot.com/

dsr-5 is the only stuff that I've seen that not only removes the silicone but the residue also.
Honeydew, silicone is horrible, horrible stuff if applied wrong, if it's ever applied on something that requires paint, you might as well just throw it away, you'll never get the reside off. I have been able to get not only the silicone off but the residue also.
I was actually using it today rebuilding my license plate light, 5 min to take off all the silicone that the P.O. slathered on it! In some spots he used a paint brush to apply it!

I found a dealer that has numerous locations around the country so you might be able to save shipping costs by going to a brick and mortar store. I'm going to call them on Friday, they are located 2 blocks from my office! www.rshughes.com/locationfinder/#ca

Good morning Thank you for your inquiry for the DSR-5. I currently stock this material in Oakland. The current price is $36.76/quart. We are open Monday-Friday 7am to 530pm. Please let me know if you need anything else. I just went through the whole check out and you need to select quart from the pull down menu.
Where it says 5 gallons, there's a arrow to the right, click on the arrow and select quart!

I just ordered mine from Federal Saw and Tool. The website said sold out, but I talked to a really nice guy, and he will have more in on Fri. He said he had gotten a dozen calls this week about DSR-5. I laughed said it was probably several people from this forum. He was a "vintage" camper admirer, and said he "appreciates what we do, restoring those classics" ! I cant wait to get all the "crap" off of "sasha" so she can be painted soon....BTW: Thanks Sweetcruisers for the info !

"Really nice guy" here Thank you for your order. I won't bother putting my link up as most forums frown on that and others here apparently have as they like the product DSR-5. Sorry the site showed only 5 gallon pails available but the country cleaned me out in the past month. All sizes available now. Good luck with your restorations!

OMG this SCHMIT works! Be sure to use gloves and don't inhale the spray and as always, be in a well ventilated space. It decreases my booger removal time by ten fold!!

Just thought I would throw this out here. I started a blog and one of the topics was dealing with silicone removal. Gone Kayaking recommended this stuff to me, but my husband had already purchased this other stuff. My husband said this stuff is awesome and it only cost 11.99. Don't know how this compares to the other stuff but it does the job with ease, has a citrus smell to it, and doesn't burn the skin. Attachments:

dsr-5 doesn't burn your skin either, from what I found taking silicone off is not the issue, silicone leaves residue that can't be painted and NOTHING I've tried except DSR-5 removes that residue. You can easily tell if the reside is still there by misting water on the infected area, it will bead and look different than the areas without it.
I'll stick with DSR-5 cause I have used it and it works!

Thanks Schweetcruisers. We are new and still learning. My husband says it is awesome stuff at getting the silicone off, now I will have to see if the residue is still there.
We had no idea what to try and stumbled across this stuff. If it doesn't get the residue off or leaves a residue behind then I guess we will be buying ourselves some DSR 5, if it does work it may be an affordable solution for others and it is easy to get as we got ours from the local hardware store. I will keep everybody posted.

I'm just starting to use the DSR 5--- I'm thinking that spraying it on a rag may be better than outright spraying as one wouldn't want it to run down into butyl putty or tempro around the windows as it will also remove any "non-drying" sealant.
Schweet what application method did you use?

Mobiltec, I watched the video and I'm getting some today. There's a local distributor here in WA who is meeting up with me in a couple of hrs, so convenient! Thanks! Very cool. Make sure you get the little yellow scraper tool with it. As seen in the video, you must be patient and work the stuff under the edge of the silicone. But once it starts to get under there it does it's job completely and does not hurt the paint at all. So just take your time. I would put it in a spray bottle to keep from wasting it. You can buy little spray bottles in the hardware store or at a beauty supply.
