It's not the box, but failing breakers that cause the problem. And yes, they can spark and burn if the trip mechanism fails.
I have Federal Pacific boxes in some of my older trailers. We are always very careful NOT TO OVERLOAD THE SYSTEM.
If one wants to add breakers and amperage to a trailer, I don't think going with the Federal Pacific box is an option.
Be safe.

I could be wrong but I do not believe that putting a 30 amp main and 2 20 amp branch circutes would constitute an overload on a camper that will not have an air conditioner and was installed in a panel that is rated for 30 amp.
There is a easy way to check the opporation of the breakers.

It is down low front wall. 159 bucks 35 amp main + 5 a/c circutes and 6 d/c. It is also a charger and converter with a thermostaticly controled cooling fan. Probably see something similar in mnew medium sized pop-ups Attachments:

replaced that with a new old piece too. Found a nice grain pattern. The inner sides of the upper kitchen cabinates are in for the same treatment. There were a few of the original ceiling panels that had to be removed for water damage around the edges that had some wonderfull looking wood grains towards the center. Attachments:

The back clips on and off. The terminal connections are all internal and protected not outside and exposed. These are designed for r/v and are made to be put in the walls without the nessessity of putting it in a box. Attachments:

The faceplate clips in no fastners for a clean look. Here is one on what I built. A d/c power outletwill go there too eventually My A/C circutes will be 1 water heater 2 fridge 3 lights/outlets 4 lights /outlets 5 charger/converter D/C circutes 1 water pump 2 fantastic fan 3 sterio 4 lights 5 12 volt plug in recepticle The battery will be going directly on the other side of the wall. Outside directly against the wall between the frame as low as I dare put it. Couldnt be better. The power cord is a 30amp twistlock removable styleitsgoing in an exzisting hole street side bout 18in back from the water fill. Got some good inexpensive ideas for outide juice. Attachments:

Here is a pic of the outlet wired. You peel away 1in of the outer casing and skin 1/4 in of the black and white ground is already bare. Then squeeze it all in till the back clips in, You can terminate in one or go thru it as pictured. Attachments:

It is FEDERAL PACIFIC breakers that are prone to failure, with documented fires as a result.
Most breakers have been used for years and are safe: General Electric, Siemens, Cutler Hammer, Square D, etc...
It is not a problem to upgrade to 30 amps. Just don't use a Federal Pacific box to do it.

That figures. Pretty much anything called "federal" is defective.
