Went to the AAA last week to see about transferring the title of Kady to my name. AAA tells me they don't handle out of state title issues. (Guess my AAA membership fee is buying me less and less, since I distinctly recall reading another member's post saying AAA handled an out of state transfer for them, but it was probably from about a year ago).
So, made an appointment and went to a California DMV office yesterday and after a considerable wait (despite appointment), was treated to a variety of dumb looks when I asked about the process to transfer title of a trailer not currently in the state. Eventually found that while I could get the process started, the trailer would need to be brought to the CA DMV for inspection (I guess to verify the VIN matches) before it could be officially titled to me and plated. When I asked if I could get some temporary permit to tow it home, they said they could give me a permit for towing within the state, but could offer nothing to help me get through the other states I had to pass through until I got it home. Also, when I asked if there was a pull-through that would accomodate a 16-foot travel trailer when I brought it in for inspection, the answer was a surly shrug and a "how should I know?" Lovely.
So I called the Indiana DMV, and the very polite gal there told me that while they couldn't issue me an Indiana title unless I was a resident, they would happily issue me a temporary sticker that should be good to get it home. All I need is a driver's license and the signed off title proving I'd bought it (don't even need a bill of sale if I have the title), and for $8.75 I could get a 96 hour permit, or a 30-day permit for $16.75. Don't need to bring the trailer to them, just me, my license, my fee and the title. What a breath of fresh air it was talking with her! Restores my faith in America, I gotta tell you.
I did also find that I have 20 days to transfer the title once I got it into California, but the clock doesn't start ticking until I enter the state, so there's no rush on that score. Looks like I've done all I can for the moment.
