Campers,
In Maryland, I have to have my 1972 Shasta 1400 inspected within 30 days of getting the tags. Can anyone tell me what is involved in the inspection of this type of trailer? I'm not sure how to prepare. The brakes and turn signals work. What else is there to inspect? The MVA page is very vague on this subject.
Thanks!

Total guess here but maybe need; smoke detector carbon monoxide detector LP gas detector fire extinguisher Anything else I forgot?? Also try calling a local RV center and ask them what is exactly needed. They would know sense all their trailers for sale have to meet the requirements.

Good thought. I'll call an RV place. Thanks.

boy if that was the case in GA i doubt some of these good ole boys down here could tag their deer hunting trailers. Wonder why the state is concerned with the inspection of them. Road safety and therefore public safety? Do you have to pay for this inspection? In GA its just the plates, think it was about 17 bucks this year.

Yes, I have to pay for it. Given that I don't yet have the water or propane hooked up and have no other functionality, it should certainly be a SHORT inspection. Let's hope!

Good call on the RV dealer contact. I have not ever had a camper inspected in NY, but I would guess that the requirements would mostly center around road safety, good tires, good bearings, operable brakes if equipped, working lights, etc. I can't imagine a state inspection involving interior items like a smoke detector and all, not that they aren't good ideas..

Most of the time, they are inspecting for the VIN...

Well that's interesting. I have a title, but I can't say that I've ever actually looked for the VIN on the camper. I know that there are a lot of threads on how to find it, so I'll read up on where I should look. I never thought of that. Thanks.

I believe the shasta vins are usually stamped into the tongue either on the inside or outside rail (think ours is on the outside curbside (1970 model so yours should be close by there i would guess). If yours has not been repainted there was originally a sticker on our street site front corner that was very faded but readable. It was only a couple digit code. The officer who came out to look at ours kept telling me it wasn't the VIN number, that it was too short. I kept telling him it was the only number on the trailer and that it was..... so.... if you get someone not familiar with these vintage low numbered vin trailers you may have to explain it to them

That is very, very helpful. I'll see if I can find it when I go out to work on her tomorrow.
Thanks!

In WA, the inspection consisits mainly of a VIN check, and road-worthiness. Rather than calling an RV dealer, who is used to dealing with new and not-near-vintage vehicles, you might do better just looking online for your state, or calling the place that does the inspection and let them know what you've got. We didn't have working systems (except for the lights) when we had ours inspected for registration, but they passed it anyway.

I can't figure out who the heck to call! I stopped at two car inspection places and they didn't know. I'll have to ask Mr. Google. Maybe he can help.
