Spent the weekend (9/28 - 9/30) in Cordele, GA at Georgia Veterans Memorial State Park. Located at exit 101 on Interstate-75. Get off and go west 9 miles to the park.
We (my parents an I) had stayed at this campground a handful of times before as far back as about 20 years ago.
Its a very nice campground and has some nice things to offer. Its right on Lake Blackshear but the areas around the campground are mostly no wake zones so no speed boats hauling around. There are plenty of sites on the lake (we arrived late in the day and were not able to get one though)
This campground also has a golf course, disc golf (with discs for rent). Something unique to this state park is they have the Sam Shortline that runs from the campground west (they are currently working on the east bound tracks) Its a day trip style train ride. You can check out the fees and schedule info here. samshortline.com/. We were supposed to have done this a couple years back but a tornado hit one of the local towns where the train ran and they had to cancel the trip. They rent a couple of bikes, also kayaks and canoes. There are gators in the lake. We took part in a moonlight paddle event they had. (i always recommend these). They have cabins and a resort on the property. There is a large field where model airplane folks come to fly their planes. This can be fun to watch on a busy day. There are retired tanks and planes to be looked at and an indoor museum at the office. 2 boat ramps on the property. A perk (if you happen to have a TV with you) is the cable TV that's included with the site.
This weekend was very humid due to the scatters rain moving through. Wet weekends are never the best weekends. The worst thing to deal with we found were the Gnats.... they are relentless and super annoying. Our poor pups were miserable outside. We always take a large fan but unless you were right in front of it you found gnats everywhere. I don't recall this being the case in the past times we had stayed here. Its possible we stayed there closer to winter and the gnats were gone by then. Tried to make the best of it but man they are bad...... Just a word of warning.
Here's a few photos.
