Ok, I am nearing the point that I need to think about what I am going to do for a door on my project. When I purchase it, the door was there but other than a latch of some kind, no sign of a door handle! I am going to rebuild the door and start from scratch so need all the help I can get in, can I find a bargman handle or should I resort to an alternative? 1961shastacompactrestoration.shutterfly.com/pictures/8Any help would be appreciated.

A Bargman L-66 can be found on Ebay most of the time. Some of them will set you back about $200.00.
I have an L-66 and I believe that it came from the early 60's. I haven't cleaned & greased it or replaced the key cylinder yet. The outside has the typical pitting.
PM or email me if you are interested in this, I can take a few pictures and send them to you. You can do the cleaning and servicing or I can. We can talk about price.

Ross, Now that we are home from Las Vegas and I had time to take a look at the L-66 and compare it to what my door looks like, either my door was replaced at some time or it had a different kind of door latch? All there is in my door is a hole with two, what looks like, screw holes. There is no evidence of a lock set on either side and the door strike was simply a surface pot metal type. I suspect that what ever was there simply resided on the inside of the door with only a knob or handle on the outside? Any thoughts? I'm not really familiar with other types of latches however, I have seen the L100 or 200 but again, they require some inset in the door panel. Help.

Ok, after doing the research I should have done before I decided on the L-66, I find that not many Shasta Compacts of my vintage used the L-66, if not any. So, in looking through the threads I found that the Locking T handle and Canned Ham Door Latch sold thru Vintage Trailer supply looks and measure out to fit my dimensions exactly. So, I now have an L-66 for sale! I am going to go ahead and get keys for it, clean it up, lube it and see what it will bring. Anyway, just thought I would let you know. Next time I will probably do a little more research before I jump the gun, however, when I think about it, I learned quit a lot through this process. On a very positive note, I just got my quote back for the fabrication of all new skin for my unit! Can you believe under $700? That does not include the roof which I intend to keep as it is in good shape but it does include everything else. Moving right along. Chuck

Give Vintage Technologies a try. They have the door latch kits for $29.95. Just remember to get the correct one, either the Right Hand or the Left Hand one. teardroptrailerparts.com/Door_Handles__Latch_Kits.phpJust mention to Frank Bear ( the owner) that Ross from Tearjerkers recommend him. I have been buying from him for years and been very happy with everything. Why not save a few bucks!

By the way Ross, did you forget to send the guide plate for the Bargeman or do you not have it? I know something was missing and finally looked at the exploded view on this page and saw that it was the guide plate. I went through the box and it wasn't included???

Hi, I have been searching around for some time now looking for a Barbmal L66 door lock for my wife's vintage Metzenbaum trailer. I came across this forum and saw some coments about L66s for sale. I am looking for one to buy and I see you have one for sale. Is it still for sale? If so what are you asking for it? Thanks. Jerry

Jerry, yep, I still have it. I purchased it from Ross and it turned out that it would not work on my compact. So, I will sell it to you for the same price as Ross sold it to me. $65. As I told Ross in my post before, it did not come with the guide plate so unless he has that you will have to find one. Also, I have not rekeyed it yet so that will also have to be done but any locksmith shop can handle that as I am told. PM me and we can work out the shipping and details. Or you can email me at clwentz@gmail.com. Chuck
