Yea! I have been wanting to buy a vintage camper for years. Cute and cozy - something I can handle on my own and continue to feed my lust for wandering! Well, Mr. Wonderful bought me a 1968 Shasta compact this month. Excited doesn't even begin to cover it. (Don't tell, but I even called in sick one day just so I could play in it) It needs some work. Especially air conditioning and heat (I live in AZ). It has been well loved and has the best aura. Just gushing, sorry. So, introducing myself and hoping to call on you to pick your brains as the process continues.... See you on the road! (Country Thunder here we come!)

I can't figure out how to share a picture. I know I have read how to do it on here somewhere but can't find it tonight. I will post a picture as soon as I figure it out.

Welcome to the club. I am still trying to figure out how to post a picture without starting a new thread. Does anyone know how? Send me PM if you know.

Your link doesn't work, to use Photobucket copy the Image(img) code from photobucket and paste it anywhere in you reply! You can post multiple pics by pasting multiple image codes in a single reply!!!

We saw some warping and water damage in a corner. Had to investigate. So far, not as bad as I first suspected. (Knock on wood quickly please). This is what we got. Once you start pulling stuff out hard to find the stop line. That tile is a bear and what is with the blue paper? Was that suppose to be a vapor barrier. Going to put new insulation in, use the old boards as templates, may lose the paneling and go for that pretty amber birch you guys keep showing... Thanks for all the ideas and info. Still trying to figure what we are going to do about air conditioning. s1299.beta.photobucket.com/user/Dennise_Rapp_Redford/media/Shasta/photo-2_zpsc360a769.jpg.html?sort=3&o=17

There are a fair number of folks who have put birch in their "toaster" style campers and it looks absolutely gorgeous. Good luck!

The first 72 Compact that we restored, we installed the AC under the bed. We put step by step instructions in a thread titled "under the bed ac" in the vent and ac section. Attachments:

boandsusan - Great ideas! Love them. How did you vent the A/C in the closet? Or did it even need it? considering both options you wrote about. Thanks! @hamlet - keep your fingers crossed for us. Been checking out your site to see what we are in for...

You are in for a lot of sweat, a few tears, maybe a couple of, um, disagreements (yeah, that's the word), hopefully little or no blood (we didn't make that one - lost a battle with the sawz-all), relief as you check off each box on your to-do list, the fun of doing the finishing touches and furnishing it, and, finally, the absolute joy of taking him/her out on the road for the first trip. And the second, and the third...

Updated our progress on PhotoBucket. Haven't figured out how to put the pictures in order, but you will get the picture. Have added A/C and heat. Waiting on the new 2-way fridge to arrive and the new J-rails. Didn't take pictures of those yet. Thanks for all the advice you've been giving! s1299.beta.photobucket.com/user/Dennise_Rapp_Redford/library/Shasta

Cut doors and installed in closet, but not getting enough air flow to cool down trailer and thus compressor cuts off. How did you vent yours BoandSusan? We cut out bottom of closet for vent and added fan in top of closet (AC in bottom of closet). Any advice?

I'm late to welcoming you. I love these little Compacts. Mine is not repaired/restored yet, but I'm hopeful. Going to go check out your pics.
