Im pretty sure that the hinge goes at the top but don't know for sure because the baggage doors were removed from this trailer. So the question is, Hinge at the top and latch at the bottom? Or the other way around?

I just checked the holes on the old hinges with the holes in the framing and it shows that the hinges were on the bottom. That just doesn't sound right to me. I think the hinge should be at the top.
Does anyone here know? It would be the same as the 56 Im sure. Mine is a 57...

Both the 57s here have hinges on the bottom.

Now that's just wrong... Ive seen later models with the hinge at the top. I know there are even later ones with the hinge on the side but having it on the bottom acts again like a funnel for water to get in. Where as if the hinge was at the top, under the brow, it wouldn't catch so much water.
Thanks for the reply Vikx. Wow you have two 57s? Do you have a blog or website?

mobiltec:
Our 1955 1500 has the utility doors hinged at the bottom.
It's more convenient since the door stays open when you want, rather than having to hold it. But on the road, if the latch comes open somehow, the door will flop open. I think the eyebrow will keep most of the rain from leaking in the top.
Hope this helps.

Ya I just think that with the edge of the door laying on the ground when it's open, it will chip the paint. Maybe I could put an elbow hinge on it to keep the door from opening further than 90 degrees? Or a simple chain? Hmmm... And I also thought about what if the door comes open while moving. That's how it lost one the doors in the first place. Guess I'll just have to make sure that can't happen... Thanks all for the replies.

Yes, Sundance and Butch Cassidy. Sundance is owned by member Lamacki1, a time capsule if there ever was one. Seriously, NO ROT. That's the only trailer I've ever been able to say that about... s189.beta.photobucket.com/user/vikxphotos/library/Look to the left for Shasta 1500... Butch is "as found" with some electrical upgrades right now.

I couldn't believe Sundance. She is a real special trailer. Unfortunately, the hauler dented the back and ruined a piece of trim. I had a piece of the same trim, but so sad to see such a beautiful trailer with a visible repair...
Lamacki actually found Butch just a few weeks after she purchased Sundance. We are partners. Butch is in pretty good condition, too. It was very dirty and the screws are all rusty. The windows work but are dirty as well. Sundance was CLEAN. Amazing, really. And by the way, that's the original yellow paint on the side...
All the edge trim is loose on Butch, windows being polished and I'll probably pull the rear skin to be sure all is well. The original putty is very interesting; has a mesh backing embedded with putty. These aren't the first older Shastas I've seen in better than normal condition.. Most have "some" water damage but not as much as you'd expect.

I've seen that mesh putty tape on other trailers too.

My '61 had that same mesh putty tape around in it.

I decided the hinges will go on the bottom just like original but I will put a chain or elbow hinge on it to restrict it from opening more than 90 degrees. That will keep them from dropping all the way to the ground and chipping the paint on the edges. Thanks to all who posted....

On our 1955 the doors can open completely and still clear the ground by several inches. You might measure clearances before doing anything drastic, might save you some effort.

Oh I don't care about time and effort. If I did I wouldn't be involved in a hobby like this. I also don't want the doors hitting the bottom of the trailer either. That would also chip the paint. I don't even know if the hinges go that far and if they dont it will put stress on the hinge screws. Should only take 15 minutes per door to install. And the one on the curb side will make a nice place to set your drink. Sort of a fold open table.

In my 56 it's the same. I agree with Hugh, mine open completely and it's actually quite nice not to have to deal with them being in the way when sliding things in and out. The lock holds quite well also.

That big back cargo is great but infamous for leaks, specially if ya got a bustle...
I learned the hard way that the 57 cargo doors shouldn't be open if you are jacking the tongue up... How do I know that?

Maybe a limiter like a chain or hinge, that can easily be removed from the door to allow it to open fully if needed.
