You know what? I just took full coverage off my 2000 4 x 4 Z71. It's not worth much if totaled... maybe 8K. Since it's not my daily driver, I'm taking the chance... The trailers have been turned down by more than one company.

I had no problem getting nationwide to cover my trailer for $5000...costs about $60 per year I think.....they basically just took my word for it. I would say one would do what you'd do for a house...bill of sale, information on comps, and good pics of what you have. With maybe a statement of value witnessed by a couple of people.

Our insurance company is asking for comps in order to determine a value. I'm so frustrated! I can't even find ONE old Shasta Compact ad anywhere to see where to even start. At least not any like the older canned ham shaped Compacts. So I think my only other option is to get an appraisal done on it and hope they will except that instead of comps.

Try AAA. People on TCT say AAA will cover for what you say it's worth. Not sure about cost. Ours isn't restored and we don't have a lot in it but we may insure it anyway because if we had to replace it I'm not sure what we would have to pay. Seems like older trailers keep getting harder to find and more expensive.

Maybe this will give you an idea, LVT: “How much did they cost back then? A 1958 16' Airflyte cost $1095. By 1961 the cost had risen to $1250. A 1963 Shasta 1500 went for about $1195. “ From: www.freewebs.com/kc8jwa/classicshastas.htm

What about using the unrestored Compact advertised on TCT? I think the price was close to $6500. That's with no work on it! Can a few of us give written values of member's trailers? I've done a bunch (plus 3 Shastas). Would be glad to help, if it would. There was another that sold for quite a lot in Florida...

I was able to get insurance for my Yellowstone for damage, theft, etc through State Farm with the original cost amount (What it was worth in 1964) I haven't done the Shasta yet, but will when that time comes. Does anyone know where I can get an original cost Price list on a boxy 65 Shasta Compact?

Ok, I found out that my husband was able to get ours fully insured without comps through our insurance company; Auto Owners for a declared value ($6500 - I wish he would of told them higher...arggh. Oh well.. It's $40/year. Though I believe there is $100-250 deductible.
Edited to correct deductible.

my insurance co. told me that my car insurance covers whatever is being towed. My car is insured through Haggerty . They insure collectors cars , boats and motorcycles. I will call them one of these days and make sure. I too still have alot of years before the whole AARP thing. Will let you all know what haggerty says. Ours is Allstate for our vintage cars (only kind we drive) with replace agreed value. To get that we had appraisal done and turned in current pics with 3 caparisons. Anything in tow covered. Homeowners at Allstate would cover when parked unhooked at home. Unhooked at campground or in storage and something happens to it? Better hook up what remains and call adjuster LOL Stolen? Right now I'd be screwed. Am checking into coverage with same co. and let yall know what happens. Not too thrilled with claim service though. It took about 6 months of threats and fighting with them to replace a broken windshield on our 67 Dart. Windshield was no problem, gasket no problem, $375.00 plastic strip that holds windshield and gasket in car? HUGE PROBLEM! LOL

Bummer; saw the title of this thread and got a little excited, we paid a lot for our Shasta but just figured we'd take the loss if anything happened to Deuce. Not that we've thrown a ton of extra $$ into it, but sheesh, the custom cushions set us back around $500, Marti's awning in the $300+ range, new feather topper, comforter, sheets, flamingos and other funzies; probably add up to $1,200 (shh - don't tell Mr. HOW). Anyway I seriously doubt any of us can prove (to an insurance company) the value of what we value our little rolling pieces of Americana and happiness at, it's scary (especially for you guys that put all your love, sweat & tears, and $$$ into the resto), but love & respect them like an older family member; make lots of fun memories, take lots of photo's, and treat them like the precious little gems they are.

Just insured out '61 Airflyte with Metlife. $5000 comp and collision (it's covered for liability thru our car policy), $100 deductible. They didn't ask for proof of value, said basically it's worth what you say it's worth. $36 per year! Well worth $3 a month to have full coverage. Metlife's a good company, I would recommend them to anyone.

I'm in the process of insuring and registering Beverly, our brand new (to us) 1966 Shasta. I'm going through Geico who require an appraisal. The agent suggested I call my bank? I tried explaining that her value is based on her restoration and current condition. We could find another '66 Shasta 1500 trashed out selling for $800. So what!? That has no bearing on Beverly's value.
Who do I call for an appraisal and how much should the appraisal cost?
Also, Geico is covering her for $114 a year with a $500 deductible, medical coverage of $1000, and three free coverages: 1k emergency expenses (lodging or transportation) 5k (personal effects) 10k (for injury or damage to rv or state park).
She made sure I understood liability transfers from vehicle towing it.
And do I need insurance in order to register her and get plates at the DMV? The last owner wants her plates back. We are in Albuquerque, NM.
Thanks!!!

In Colorado you don't need insurance on the trailer but you need it on the tow vehicle. I've never been asked to produce a insurance card when I register my work trailer.
I'd check with your local DMV but I would bet you don't need to it insured to register it.

That's good news!
What do I need to register her? Just the title?

That's good news! What do I need to register her? Just the title? Guessing, title, bill of sale, first born, some states require a vin check, DNA Sample, $$$ and Patience you are dealing with a government agency after all!

Your bill of sale plus all the receipts, current pictures, and any ebay listings (sale prices) of similar models that can provide documentation. If it's completely restored you'll want lots of pics.
