Our story is like so many others on here, I have this great idea to buy a vintage travel trailer that I can dress it up to my liking so I get my husband's blessing to purchase one to "fix", but once we start uncovering one piece at a time, we realize "whoa..." (as my husband gives me his sideways stare, thank God he loves me). So my husband decides it's better to just rebuild so that he has a peace of mind knowing all the pieces are solid, intact, and SAFE! There were a few panic moments where I asked him if I should just resell her. Soooo....excuse my lack of expertise and dumb questions that are sure to make eyes roll and heads shake, but since my husband is at a paying job fulltime, it's my duty to do the research and ask the questions. Here is our current state of things: Interior is mostly gutted, with the exception that the side walls are up, but the subfloor is gone and now we are down to the trailer frame. We are doing our best to remove the surface rust and then we repaint/seal the metal frames before installing our new subfloor. Here is a link to the rest of our pictures: s1332.photobucket.com/user/memeleclair/slideshow/1961%20Shasta%2016SC

It's there! Ideally, you will undertake a frame off restoration at this point, since the goal is "solid, in tact and SAFE!"
Your research should begin on the rebuild threads....look at those from Ross, Hamlet, Hugh Currin, Schweetcruisers, and Flying Ham for a start. And of course Mobil Tec's restoring the Shasta Series!
The order these were built in is the order you want to follow-- Floor, Frame, rough electrical and plumbing, plywood, interior cabinets, finish electrical and plumbing, insulation, skin (sides then roof, then front and back), drip rail, PAINT, windows, eyebrows.

My husband thought he could do some electrical stuff before the floor gets installed...is that wrong do you usually do that afterwards? We plan to take off the panels and wall wood framing in sections. So after we get the subfloor installed, we'll start the repairing all the rotted frames, starting with the front, rear, and ceiling, then the side walls. We will put in new panels since it's currently in Ash and birch is more accessible (and prettier) here. We don't want to take off all the skins at the same time. We did save all the cabinetries and plan to salvage them with new countertops and figure out some new plumbing.

Familyof6....Is this a 61 for sure? I have a 62 16sc and it is identical (not that I know for sure that the 61 and 62"s cant be the same.....) I went to the Pismo trailer rally today looking for my model and there were TONS of 62 Airflytes and others but not one 16sc did I see! One lady told me that they are rare..(aren't they all rare?lol)...Any how, I am doing a full restore from the ground up by default. I bought it a year ago, thought I could just "fix' some stuff and now realized its all or nothing. Its now down to the chassis. The chassis is brand new now it seems, and now to rebuild. I would love to exchange info with you. I have a blog, but not all of the detailed pix are on there. Send me a message if you want to exchange emails. People here know way more than I do, but I can send you pics and vice=versa as we both go along. Don't you love those little fold up tables??? I was cracking up at your hubby drinkin a beer on the toilet...
Hope you get your sequence. i can send you a rebuild order that a senior member sent to me that was very helpful.
Brooke
By the way, my original name before I lost my login password last year was Familyof5...haha!

In reference to this post here --> vintageshasta.proboards.com/post/69040/threadWhen installing the subfloor to the floor frame using carriage bolts, hubby wants to know if there's a specific way to deal with the head of the carriage bolt wanting to stick up higher than the level of the subfloor. Is there a specific way to recess the bolt head so that it's level with the sub floor? Or should he just crank on the bolts until they sink themselves into the sub-floor (which he's worried might put cracks/strain into the wood, leading to potential damage later in the life of the floor)??

Hi Brooke, The title says it's a 1961 and we haven't found any evidence to show otherwise (or actually to confirm the date). Ours do look similar don't they?! I love that we are working on the same model. It's neat to see your progress and serves as a visual example since you guys are a few steps ahead of us Meme

My husband got all the surface rust sanded down and coated the metal frame with POR 15. He's now installing new wood frames for the floor which will be followed by installing the subfloor. After the subfloor he'll start working on the wall frame, section by section. Slow going, but things are getting done! With 4 young kids under the age of 6, his busy work schedule, baseball, soccer, LIFE, I think we are making some real progress
