I have noted the thumb screws occassionally start to loosen and I am worried that the globe could fall and smash while in transit. Now, I do not have original bases, so maybe that is the problem. Is this common? Is there a fix? Is there supposed to be a gasket or something that helps with the vibrations?

The screws can and will vibrate loose. How do I know?? Because while I was sanding the inside of my trailer I heard a loud crash and turned around to find my original rear globe broken in tiny little pieces. I have heard that many folks remove and safely pack away their globes while in transit just to be safe. The base for my Veritas/Humphrey propane light does have little springs between the thumb screws and the base that act as locks for the thumb screws.

Hmm, springs, neat idea. The previous owner of my trailer used clear silicone caulking, but that was on some crappy newer brass fixtures. I will have to engineer something, I don't like the idea of taking the globes off all the time....

Hmmm ... I don't have any globes except the gas light globe so it makes sense that they probably got broken in transit somewhere down the line. My other lights have those plastic striped shades.

I have heard of placing a wide rubber band on the base of the glass globe. This will not only hold the globe in place but keep the screws from backing out.

I lost my front globe to it shaking loose. After that: Loctite. It's not so strong that you can't break it away if you need to change the bulb. (We have a CFL so hopefully won't have to replace soon - will do an LED when we do)

Jim Jim, did you find globes to replace the broken one that are the same? I was cleaning my back globe and it turned a slight yellow. Any suggestions on how to get it back to white or where to get a replacement?

I did not find and original, but there are a lot of vintage style alternatives available. You just need to look for the same fitter size. I have attached a picture of the one that I have now. As far as the yellowing goes, I suppose you might try soaking the globe in bleach water first. Beyond that I am not quite sure how to remove the yellowing. Attachments:

Jim I am in need of a couple of these thumb screws with the springs. Anyone have any suggestions. I have been to a couple of hardware stores and they couldn't find anything to match. I have the globe and it fits perfectly just can't attach it. I have one and need a couple more.
