I have a 1955 Shasta. I've looked all over and can't locate a VIN number. Can anyone give me an idea where it might be located?

Look just behind the hitch on the inside of the frame rail on the drivers side. There is a 1/2" x 2" plate tack welded in. I had to scrape paint and use a flash light to see the vin it is only 5 or 6 characters.
Good Luck

Thanks for reply, I just went out and crawled under the trailer and checked the inside of the frame rail. Unfortunately, I still can't see the VIN plate. It's possible that it's there; I'll do some scraping. U do mean that it's behind the hitch under the trailer? The trailer is a 1955. Thx again, Jim

Man you're the best. Your pictures are excellent. Unfortunately, my trailer does not have a VIN plate in this location. I do think though, now that I kinda know what to look for, I might be able to find the thing. Again, Thx for the help-hope at some point I can return the favor! Jim

i found my vin # last night in a similar location to red dirts, however mine was attached to the wall of the tongue arm instead of the "floor" of the C bar like red dirts. my tongue arm is a full rectangular tube... hope that helps. i wonder if your tongue has been painted a bazillion times??

This is one of those fortunately/unfortunately stories. Unfortunately the tongue of my trailer was painted a bazillion times. Fortunately i wire brushed and stripped down, Unfortunately I wasn't looking for a VIN plate. Fortunately I coveref the tongue with POR15. Unfortunately it looks like I'm going to have to try to remove the POR15. U C what I mean; its a can of worms. Hey good to hear from u again and thanks. JIm

Thanks for the info and photos Red Dirt! I always thought that the VIN on my trailer was stamped on the frame and lost to years of paint and sanding. The tongue frame has a metal piece welded similar to yours, but was covered in rust and paint. I took a sander and slowly removed the rust and paint to reveal the numbers 15657. The title has the VIN as C10S15657 so I am not sure where the "C10S" came from.
What did your VIN end up being?
Thanks again!
Jim

Mine is stamped into the frame (1/4 tall) on the right outside top edge and on a plate on the left inside edge. They're both toward the front just behind where the tongue is welded to the frame. They both match the title. The right and left as facing toward the front.

Wish I had read this before going to the DMV and not being able to find it! It seems so obvious after the fact. Great info.

is there a guide from Shata to each year model and make? I found the following stamped on the frame to the left side of the hitch "T6688"

Jim, after my visit to the DMV trying to get my new Title for the Compact, with only a bill of sale, and the DVM person telling me that my VIN# was already assigned, she started popping in letters in front of it. My guess is the C stands for camper (which she tried) and the S stands for Shasta (which she also had to add) because with only the c added someone already had that VIN # too!) Maybe the DMV person on your Title just added the 10 in between to insure no one else had that combo.
