So, I had a couple of hours to donate to one of my gals, and decided to go back to the place that put new tires on Miss Mississippi 1951's split rims, since one tire just would not hold air. Had the problem fixed. Got to discussing the cost to convert to new non-split rims and they pointed me to a flat bed Trailer dealer/repair professional, not a RV Dealer, about 10 miles up the road. Turned out the owner was a really laid back guy, willing to check out my split rim and see what he had in stock that would mate with the new tire with all of 15 miles on it. Don't know why I didn't check it out sooner...since I have begun to hate split rims. Found a basic rim, painted silver that will take the new tire, AND should fit over the big hub and tapered spindle perfectly. Cost for the rim...$37.50!! Bought 1 to take up and test fit it. Also bent his ear about our continuing discussion of pros and cons of buying trailer tires for our trailers. He said car and truck tires are built the way they are, because among oother things they are made to "turn", while trailer tires are made to pull straight. He mentioned that in his experience, he has seen auto/truck tires that were not properly inflated that started to develop cracks from the center toward the treads on the side walls. He also mentioned that he prefers the 8-12 ply trailer tires over the "radial" trailer tires, because the radial trailer tires seem to develop those cracks I mentioned if the tire is under inflated, and you are going to pay a 15% to 20% premium for that priviledge for the radials, and get no greater performance. Said the 8/12 ply tires do not appear to develop cracks if they are under inflated a bit. My 8 ply trailer tires for the 1951 Clipper inflate to 60 psi when cold. Finally he also said he routinely torques his lug nuts to...ta da...100 pounds!!
Just thought I'd share this info from an older trailer guy who spent 30 minutes chewing the fat, even after I said I would "think about" those $37.50 each rims. Heck I decided to buy the one, just because he was so darned pleasant, so he would at least ring up a sale, for his kindness.
