So this may seem a little simplistic, but...The screw heads are Phillips in nature, and are so rusted they crumble away at the slightest turn of the screwdriver. Any tips on removing these without breaking that precious plastic lens?

wd-40 (or some such pentrating liquid) the screws and let them sit before attempting again and hopefully that will work. let us know if/when that works

yeah, try soaking it in WD40 and let sit overnight, I have in the past used a dremel tool with a cut off bit and cut a groove for a flathead screwdriver in the top before as well.

Wonder what the backside looks like? Do you have back hatch way on that girl Chris? Some vises grips and a wiggle, wiggle would be a blessing.. yeah? Like the UV said.. soak and wait, but you are working in a tight spot. Once there stripped, your finished... plan b

Thank you all for the replies. Universal, those are in great shape...you will be the first to know how this works out, I love 'em! My first thought was to soak them in something penetrating, but can't get behind it so was not sure that it would do any good. I've sprayed them down and they are soaking now. As far as the hatch, they are surface mounted outside the aluminum, so no way really behind them. I was re-checking the photo and the rust really does show around the screws in the plastic, so a good soaking from wherever I can reach should help. I'm a little afraid of the condition the pans will be in...especially after seeing the backings of the marker lights. The good news is that I put some power to them today and they actually lit up! I have to hook to the truck to test out the signals, but got some running light...probably the first time in 35 years!

So today my camera left me high and dry, and at the worst time. Kinda would have liked a little record to look back to for reference.
The lights did not fare too well today. Even after soaking the screws down as well as possible, the heads were pretty well gone. One out of six of the cover screws came out. The others pulled through them, and left the holes too large for the original screw size. Even though I had all the lights working before completely dismantling them, the bases of the lights were so badly rotted that they crumbled away when pulled away from the putty backing them. The lenses are not hopeless but the lights are pretty well shot.

I can send you my lights and basses, (in pic above) the bases are a bit rusted, but I just went and gave them a once over, medium surface rust, but the metal is still plenty thick to put back in, nothing some sandpaper and paint wont fix. the light sockets will need a good cleaning/rust removal I'll throw them in the box with the other stuff.
