I'm confused... the brochure for the compact says to prevent leaks it has a "one piece rolled edge roof extending entire perimeter of sidewalls" Our compact has had work done to the roof - It has a flat sheet of aluminum on top with much goop applied to it. The rest of the skins are the 6" pattern. I'm thinking that perhaps the flat section on the roof is a replacement. I read the posts about replacing skins and looked at the tutorial. If I am understanding this correctly, the skin is made up of sections of aluminim that is scored with a pattern and interlock with each other. Soooo the "one piece rolled edge roof..." described in the brochure is actually made up of multiple sections. Right? Also, Is the aluminum "Z" strip that separates the two paint colors made by masking off the strip before it is primed and painted? Thanks for any help you can give.

My 69 compact has a different pattern design from yours but to answer the first question my roof has a 4" break/rolled pattern and does have 3 seams in it. It is not a smooth one piece item. The seams are locked together so it does not come apart like the siding does. One of the seams was right in the middle of where the roof vent is. I had a lot of water damage there. I sure it didn't help that there was a raised section right under the roof vent. I just painted mine but it breaks up colors with panel design. If I was painting model with Z stripe I would prime all and then I would paint upper section and come down enough to cover where stripe would be. Then when dry I would tape off upper line of stripe and above and paint stripe. Again after drying I would tape off for lower line of stripe and leave upper color and stripe covered and then paint lower color. This keeps from having to tape and undo and the tape again.

Thanks blu269ovl, If I could find a sheet of aluminum wide and long enough, I wonder if it would make sense to try to replace the roof with a single sheet. It sounds like a lot of folks have had problems with roof leaks.

Thanks Red Dirt! I'll check out those links. Perhaps I'm just a sucker for punishment, but I'm actually looking forward to polishing that Z stripe to see how it turns out.

Get yourself a decent buffer and it will go pretty easy. A polished z sure makes a difference on the look.
