I feel like I imagine my dad felt like after hear bust something and running upstairs to see me laying in the wreckage of some catastrophe and yelling " what happened up here!". Anyway, The previous owner had said the the vent hole in the roof had originally had an air conditioner in it. I guess he then took it off when he built his party cage on the top. well the air conditioner was mounted by using liquid nails and then take 1x1s and framing the top of the hole and I guess putting the air conditioner on that. There are some random small screw holes in the roof that look to be from the old airconditioner as well, after getting the 1x1s off I took a wire wheel and scrubbed for an hour with little success. Now I have no idea what to do, the whole roof has been coated with this black kinda gooey stuff, nothing is coming off and I dont want to mount the new vent over this. what should I do? I have this flat white sticky gummy tape stuff the rv guy gave me to install the vent but I doubt that would fill in the holes. I was thinking a ton of caulk might make it leak less. I dunno.

went to home depot picked up a spray can of stripper and a small putty scraper, so far the hard part is getting the scraper to get around the divots where screws had gone through. and made it uneven so far Ive done about 3 coats of stripper, its coming off really good. will probably have a nice clean surface to work with in another 20 minutes. I'll post pics

I think you don't want to use caulk from what I've read on this forum. You want to use butyl tape to seal. I'm sure one of the more experienced folks (RED Dirt comes to mind) could be pm'd for a response.

Im not sure if I used butyl tape or not. I was given some white flat roll of putty at the rv store. The guy said this is what I would ned t o install the vent, then he told me to piant it with elastomer to seal it. I think I have some black very sticky stuff leftover from a window install I did on my car. I think that is Butyl but Im not positive. I posted more pictures in my renovation thread
