I went out to my '62 Shasta Airflyte today and for some reason the door wouldn't unlatch. In the process of messing with it I snapped the Bargman L-66 handle off. So now I've got a door that will rattle but not open. Is there anyway of getting into the trailer short of trying to get one of the windows out? I've looked at the exploded diagram of the latch and don't see how I can slide the latch over.
Thanks,
Lee

Looking at the exploded view, the shaft needs to turn.Is there any of that left ? If there is,you might try using a dremel tool or something to make a slot and use a flat blade screw driver to turn it .anyone else have any ideas ?

The handle broke right where it seems all of them break, right at the hinged side of the hand hole of the handle. The only access I have to the interior part of the latch is through the locking hole on the righthand side of the handle.
Now seeing what the latch sets are going for, I sure hope that I kept the old original one.

Looks like there are 2 screws to take off,did you try that and see where it gets you? Soak the heck out of them with penetrating oil for a couple of days before trying.I think at worst case a cutting wheel on a dremel tool or grinder can open it up for you to get it open.

Just use a pair of channel locks and grab whats left.. Should open right up.. My 68 handle was broken like this: ..and it still easily opened by hand.. if the break is a little closer to the pivot point and you need more leverage, channel locks should do it~

Can't soak the screws because I can't get the door open to get to them... the trailer door is closed. You might be talking about the grab handle, I'm talking about the door latch handle.
I can't grab the handle and open it, because it won't open... the sliding bolt doesn't unlatch from the frame of the door.
I can grab what's left of the handle and pull the handle, but the door is still latched to the door frame.
Or... no matter what I do I can not get into the trailer, short of going through a window at this point.

Ok I get it.. you can pull the handle and it 'should' unlatch the door, but its not due to some other mechanical failure inside the mechanism.
Not a fun situation to deal with I'm sure~
Since the latch is broken and messed up anyways, maybe you can drill out the key hole area and then use something to pry the latch out of the way through that little hole?
Other than that, you might be looking at removing the rear window as its most likely big enough to carefully crawl through? Maybe send a kid in first to try the handle from the inside?
Good luck on it~

Hold on.. another idea.. If the handle is gone on the right side, can you get through that empty hole with a pair of needle nose and gran the latch end to pry it to the right?

Already tried it, I can't see or reach that end of the latch.

Okay, I'm in. I'm still skinny enough to get through the back window... bad news is after taking it out I found more rot below the window. It looks like the latch bolt broke and was stuck between the door and frame which is why I couldn't get the door open. I couldn't even get it open from the inside without taking the latch out of the door.

We had it happen once were the keys got locked inside while we were camping. Got a 10 year old kid to crawl through the baggage door and get in under the rear bunk. lol
Glad to hear you got in.
